Puppy Socializing – Eternal Bugaboo?1

Good Morning!

puppy-socializing-chihuahuaI talked to one of my trainer friends, and this topic came up during our conversation. The point was that when it comes to puppy socializing, the first four months of puppy life is taking into account generally. Related to the further life of our puppy this period is a determining aspect. Namely, the character, its temperament, and conduct develop throughout this beginning period. What happens during this time-frame will determine how our dog will connect with others being people, dogs or other animals.

What’s Behind the Puppy Socializing?

The behavior and reactions of canines are people keep as companion dogs among civilized circumstances can be characterized by two groups:

A) It’s one of the dog’s social behavior and bonding to their owners as well as over other family member dwellings together. The learning of this behavior takes place roughly genetically guided and a natural way.

So, it’s self develops, assuming the maintenance circumstances are proper to the race. This is the “passive” way, for example; the little dog discovers on his own not to snap a bee from the flower.

B) The other one is the dog’s social behavior to environmental stimuli or from the influx of non-residential space, including also the stimulus of foreign people and animals.

To the stimulus mentioned throughout this section and emerging on effect of those – expected by people and society and considered correct and acceptable – behavior and reactions every dog should be trained and accustomed to.

That’s the “active” part we include into socializing process intentionally. For instances, we teach the pup different commands for good behavior.

What Should Our Puppy Learn?

In this stage of life, the hearing, seeing, smelling, tasting and touching are those senses the puppy socialization forms step by step. (I’ll talk about their mysterious sixth sense another time.) Our puppy will use these in his whole life to experience and perceive scene, voices, smells, flavors and touch.

puppy-socializing-learningThis time-frame makes familiarize our puppy different things and produces occasions to learn in which he needs to know his way around. Different experiences and challenges can occur anytime, and this period also prepares him to recognize, understand and solve those.

This time period is the necessary key to a tight bound, what you might build with your doggie. But, we need to accept that the quality of that bond depends on our effort only. Puppies generally are eager to learn. We need to utilize this attribute to develop our puppies a trusted society member.

My friend, we owe to our dogs to give them fundamental training and proper puppy  socializing. All dogs must be socialized, regardless of their race, place of purchase, or anything else. To socialize your puppy is a complete responsibility of you, his owner.

Why Now?

That’s because it is a once in a lifetime opportunity ever again! Puppies are the most receptive to learning good behavior during this period. And put our hands on our hearts, is it much better not to give a chance something wrong to develop than bother with the repair later, right?

Many problems can be traced back to a lack of socialization such us unwanted barking or destructive chewing as well as separation anxiety, etc. I’d say the effort and time you invest now will benefit you later.

Please, imagine two dogs. One of the two are well socialized and the other one wasn’t so lucky to getting through this important training phase. What do you think what will happen with them one by one?

If you have a well-socialized puppy, you can go to everywhere like public dog parks when you want. Your doggie possesses a healthy confidence, but doesn’t want to scare people and other dogs. What is more, other people will acknowledge his or her behavior. And you’ll be a proud owner as well.

On the other hand, if you miss training your pup – for some reason – you’ll struggle with a timid canine. A fearful dog shows uncertainty in all situations he’ll meet in the future. Shy dog’s attribute is that s/he gets involved into messy things like fighting with other dogs.

That temperament leads to that you cannot go into community with your animal. That is not good for your canine because s/he doesn’t know, how is proper to relate toward others? And that also not good for you if your four-legged pet isn’t able to behave a civilized way.

The majority of accidents “caused by dogs” are due to a lack of socialization. Furthermore, the unsocial canines have great chance to end up in the streets, or in the best case in a shelter. If they have a luck, an experienced person may rescue and train them. If it doesn’t happen, then put down will be their fate.

Consequently, it’s no doubt that this process needs to start now.

A Skeptical Question

“It really is a good idea to socialize your dog to strangers? I read often than dogs can be stolen easily, by pull out from a kennel, opened the gates. In all cases, the hosts write that the dog is very friendly. Is that acceptable? Why is it good if the dog was friendly strangers so anyone could steal?”

I got this question from a woman – waving the newspaper in her hand – while we talked dog things in the market. You can read the answer and article continuation tomorrow.

P.S.: Are you at the start of your puppy socializing maneuver? Then I hope you can pick up some thought of food from this post. If you have questions, supplement or opinion, the comment box is awaiting for those. Thanks!
