Can Your Dog’s Cost Be Lower?1

Greetings my readers, I hope you’re after a relaxing sleep. I’m pleased to tell you that Zizi (my older dog) and Liza (the new puppy) are in good health. The little rescued German Shepherd mix got the de-worming tablets and her first vaccination on Monday. The next is due after three weeks. As she isn’t perfectly protected yet, I wouldn’t bring him in direct close to other dogs. She has good appetite and is very nimble and docile. But, let’s get to the today’s topic.

I dealt with to be caring dog owner means frequent cash outflows here. I also indicated there that I’ll discuss about saving options on expenses we spend on our dogs. So, I grab the today’s occasion to meet my promise.

What Kind of Saving Tips Are Here

To lower costs isn’t easy, but there are possibilities to reduce our monthly dog expense effectively. I am in a position that I can give my dogs they require. However, there may be loving dog owners who are on budget. And yet they keep their dogs as their essential and devoted companions.

The following tips are primarily for those of you, but others can also benefit. But, first of all, I’ll tell you that saving on pet costs doesn’t mean in my interpretation to withdraw any necessary expenses vital to keeping our dog healthy. Far from it! I like the dogs better and appreciate all caring owners than to suggest such a thing.

The American Pet Products Association estimates pet owners will spend $55,53 billion on their animals this year. And the  food, supplies and veterinary costs make up more than 68 percent of this. The rest is divided among a variety of services like boarding, day care, grooming, pet hotels and pet sitting.

Let’s see what and how can we reduce on our dog’s expense.

At the Start: Getting a Dog Companion Fits to Your Budget

lower-dog's-cost-choose-the-right-breedVarious elements are to count on when you decide which kind of dog is best to take into your household. Starting from the right lengthy walks and exercising a bigger canine requires. And continue with our lifestyle possible proper for a smaller dog instead. Ask yourself: are you ready to handle the everyday food and health issues (and bills) that might come up?

Additionally, it’s useful to know what to count on when the annual expenses come to mind? You need to anticipate paying no less than between $1,315 and $1,845 for your dog. Obviously, the amount will vary by the size of your animal. A bigger canine usually could cost more. He is eating more, needs greater dog house, larger outdoor place and alike.

The same applies when choosing between purebred dog or mixed. You have to be aware that purchasing a purebred dog can cost you even thousands of dollars. Of course, among the purebred dogs, you can find frequently occurring and rarely seen species equally.

Naturally, you have to pay more for a dog which is a rare breed. I tell you just one example: a Cava-Poo-Chon puppy price can reach the $3500 tag. And you have to sign up for a waiting list and put down a $300 deposit; moreover, when your dog arrives depends on others.

However, perhaps, doing an excellent deed can be a matter of principle for you. Then why don’t you contemplate about adopting a dog over your local animal rescue organization? You’ll pay only the small adopting expenses (around $30 – $50) for a devoted and loving companion.

Just make sure to perform your record searches: Your chosen doggie has got all the necessary shots? What’s the typical life span of s/he? What are the medical tests s/he went through? Ask to see the related veterinary data. Based on those you will learn about any pre-existing circumstances that might increase in bills in the future.

Saving on Foods and Toys With Coupons

lower-dog's-cost-use-dog-food-couponsLuckily, you can find many deal websites on the Internet providing pet promotions and freebies. For instance, on MyPetSavings.com, you can find coupons on anything from dog food to household items that get rid of pet smells. And you also can subscribe via emails or RSS to get announcements on free things.

Alternatively, you may visit the Savings Center of Wag.com that gives discounts. At present, you can obtain 25% off pet food on your first order (Code: 25FOOD). Alternatively, for example, you can buy Wellness Complete Health Small Breed Adult Turkey & Oatmeal with 30% savings.

Furthermore, it’s worth having a look to PetSmart.com. Today I saw their actual offer to save 30% off $150, 20% off $100, 15% off $60 on your online order. And the free shipping is a plus, over $49.

If you’re going shopping at retailers like Petco.com, watch out for coupons and request to being a partaker in their reward’s projects.

There is another saving tip that I prefer always. I use to buy dog food in bulk, and you also can do that.

For example, at PetSmart, the dog food called Nutro Natural Choice costs $14.99 per a 5 lb bag. However, if you purchase the 30 lb bag for $52.99, then you spend less than $9 per 5 lb.

Expensive toys, gourmand treats and meals, and also stylish dog garments can certainly increase your expenses. Even so, no one has demonstrated that these items are vital to the happiness of our dogs.

And, when you’re on a spending budget, think about leaving the dream extras and go for easy ways to satisfy your dog’s need. I experienced that they prefer to have fun with you compared to a tricky toy.

Going back to the dog food; I cannot emphasize enough the timely feeding and accurate administration. I’m saying this because I know a dog owner who random provide the nutrition quantity. She has a remorse because she leaves her dog alone and by coming back she put her canine much more than necessary.

This way, she is inefficient in animal feed, and her German Shepherd is frequent patient at her vet. And this leads to the higher expenses, although it could be lower. Anyway, next time I’ll continue with dog treats and in the third part I’ll discuss about how you can reduce your vet bills.

Choose Proper Pet Among Large Dog Breeds

AHA, you have made up your mind to acquire a new dog from large dog breeds? Great! And you simply aren’t certain which breed will perfectly match the size of your home? No problem, but wait a minute, please. Earlier than you end up beating your head against the wall because of an erroneous decision, you ought actually to weigh the volume of area you will be able to offer to your newcomer roommate.

Your household dog is undoubtedly an icon, counting from Snoopy to Lassie and nowadays pets just like the Obama family’s doggie, Bo. However – supposing you do not particularly need a Lassie to guard Timmy off of the well or possibly a Snoopy to fly aircraft tasks on the Red Baron – what could you look for in a household canine?

I do ask this because – taking everyday life – chances are you’ll wish to super size your espresso and acquire additional toppings in your pizza. However, when it’s time to pick your dog, larger doesn’t all the time imply better. Canine breeds aren’t same by heritage in the things they require.

Don’t Fool Yourself by Present Dog Size

Don’t, I say again, DON’T form this choice solely on the lovely little pet you could be cradling within your arms this time. As human children will be grown up after a time, the same applies to puppies too. They are also grown to their adult size, but you’ll be surprised because of the short available time.

Another consideration to related size can be that you simply don’t succeed in getting a canine from large dog breeds now. Of course, you may have expectations about relocating to a larger place later. But, the life can surprise you so plans might be changed.

And it is preferred to hold off until you’ve moved into a much greater house, than to end up along with your mate crowded into a decreasing area (because of his continually growing size).

Space Considerations for Large Dog Breeds

Obviously, the dimensions of your family dog have to complement the size of your dwelling space. One possibility is adopting a little type of dog, which will be more suitable fit. Breeds like Chihuahua, Cockapoo, Poodle, Shi Tzu and some other kinds of terriers are actually nice apartment canines.

Shih Tzu Isn’t Belong To Large Dog Breeds

They continue to be little and want much less area to goof off if they are indoors. Furthermore, a few of these breeds do require a consistent exercise. However, a pair of every-day strolls across the residential block is good enough to sustain them properly also in pleasant mind.

In case you’ve got a secured balcony with stable, high balustrade, that could be sufficient outside go for your little doggie, complemented with one or more every-day walk outdoor. So, I’d say again you don’t allow canine’s look or temperament to deceive you.

Situated on the flip side, loads of toy canines grab the occasion and use their own closet in small knit sweaters, designer costumes and intelligent playthings. They even have stylish beds, for example, that is French provincial or baldachin. The pooch stuff may take up far extra space in your household compared to the canine does.

Thinking About Activity

Some canine breeds, like hunting dogs are genetically programmed to yearn the unclosed areas and exercising outside. The other breeds such as toy canines make perfect “lap dogs,” experiencing the casual way of life while not having a lot of space or time for them to run and play under the open sky.

When you’re exhausted (or shall I tell lazy?) to provide this beauteous canine the workout session it wants, then you should purchase a security system, rather than a guard dog. A toy canine such as a Bichon Frise or Brussels Griffon is pleased within your flat and needs less out of doors’ time.

The medium-sized canines make excellent household pets due to the fact they have a great mixture of characteristics. They haven’t got the excessive vital energy of little dogs as well as health complications of huge ones. They’re energetic, to a certain extent, however, can be great sofa companions too.

So, you will find a medium to big sizes, which will be satisfied in a smaller place. Take a Greyhound, for example, which is a lovely dog that additionally is very quiet, so is perfect for attached living residences. Apart from that, that mild greyhound should have day by day work out in a sufficient big area available for play and run.

Greyhound Is One of the Large Dog Breeds

The Greyhounds could operate as much speed as forty five mph. So that you don’t desire them turning your living room into a place for running. Namely, in that situation neither you nor your greyhound might be satisfied by the result.

Watchdogs in Apartment

It is vital to think about the bliss of your neighbors once you shape your decision. For example, a Rough Collie is an excellent watch dog for your metropolis residence. However, it’s essential to provide that canine enough time in a dog park to running and feel lively day to day.

On the other hand, a superb nighttime watchdog could produce a daytime nuisance. In case there is nobody at your home to distract your canine from barking on a passerby, or possibly birds, you’ll likely get complaints.

If you believe your doggie is going to be a barker, be preventative. Search for a doggie day-care option, where you could drop your favorite on the way to work, and collect him traveling home.

Multiple Dogs

It may happen that you have a dog in your household and deciding to bring home more canine. Consider the area and care requirements of every animal if you take one or two extra dog into your household. I mean every dog should have their very own bowls, relaxing place and so on.

Canines that stay open air require their very own doghouses provide protection during sleep as well as unhealthy weather. As you don’t sharing your bedroom with your neighbors, so what are the reasons you anticipate your family dog pass his doghouse for the sake of a new canine?

Example of Maintenance

When we’re speaking about dog size, we need to think about the maintenance. As I experienced, dog owners tend to ignore this – form some reason. Although, that nice, fur balls you just started to admire at the pet shop that barely nibbles pet chow, will grow up.

He will be  transforming into a one hundred twenty-five-pound St Bernard that easily might eat you out from your property. This might sound funny, but I tell you just one example.

To sustain him with eight-ten ladles of top quality pet food day by day, you’ll need to spend the cost of a daily steak dinner. The only incidental fact is that you won’t be that person who’ll eat that steak. And there is another side to things as well.

Your enormous canine additionally pushes around furnishings in your living room as feathers. If you don’t ensure proper workout for him, he rises to the occasion. So, your pet from large dog breeds may deconstruct your home in your absence, merely for revelry.

P.S.: My friend, bear in mind, looking for the perfect canine which suits your living area, life-style, and character, will make your smaller residence an intimate and brighter space to living in. What do you think?

Do Dogs Recognize Their Siblings or Parents?

Due to the heavy rain, I postponed the walk with Zizi today. Sitting in my den, I read my post-it notes and my eyes fell on one of them. One of my friends said that her year-old male dog met with its mother when walked unleashed. The mom dog also wasn’t leashed, and – as it turned out – was fired. So, her male dog mated with its own mother. She, as a newly dog owner, just stood and looked at this action due to her surprise. Hence is the interesting question within the title.

puppie-siblingsObviously, different people have distinctive answers for this question, depending on their own experiences with their dogs. And a newfound dog owner can answer this only after a certain period of time. Those who have a long experience with dogs, knows that this is possible, under certain conditions.

Influencing Factors

I’d say – based on my experiences – that this thing is very similar to us, humans.

Imagine two young families where children born at the same time. One mother – for some reason – gives her child to adoption three months after giving birth. The baby is unable to build deep relationship with the mother and brothers/sisters and will not remember them later, either.

The other child was living within his family until his ten-year ages. He had a chance to get to know his parents and brothers equally. Accordingly, he has deepened his relationship with them. What do you think, will he recognize them a year later? I’ll bet anything that he will do.

This applies to dogs as well.

Some people have had dogs that seemed to recognize and know their mother or siblings when they met them again later. Other people have had dogs that didn’t know family members when they encountered them after a time.

It’s certainly true that a lot depends on the individual dog and their experiences when they are young. If a puppy is removed from its mother at their early junior age, in all certainty, it has fewer chances to form strong bonds. That puppy may be less likely to remember his mother and siblings a year or two later.

On the other hand, If a puppy spends a long time for his mother and littermates and doesn’t leave home until he’s three or four months old, it may be much more likely that he will remember them all his life.

Adjusting to the Pack

As I experienced when I bred dogs before, puppies learn many things from their dam and littermates. This is their first pack. This is the period during which they learn how to be a dog at all.

So it only stands to reason that the longer they spend with this particular group, the more likely they are to remember the lessons they learn and the individual pack members.

It’s also important to realize that dogs think less in terms of family, i.e., mother, brothers, sister, and more in terms of “pack.” They are conscious of being part of a group.

mom-and-siblingsA puppy probably has no sense of being related to a certain dog, but he will know where he stands in relation to the pack hierarchy.

He will know that his mother must be obeyed, and that he can goof around with his brothers and sisters. He will learn the social rules of the group, but he probably doesn’t consciously think, “This is my dad, so I have to do what he says.”

He just knows that there is a bigger, stronger dog and things go better for him when he does what he’s supposed to do.

Moral System in Dogs

I’m not surprised by it, but many people are shocked by the idea that a dog would mate with his mother, or a dog would mate with his daughter. In fact, dogs do not have any kind of moral system similar to human systems. “Incest” is a humane idea, and it’s completely alien to dogs.

When dogs are in season, the only important issue is who is healthy and fit enough for breeding. Furthermore, who has the proper status within the group to have the right to breed. This approach is based on thousands of years of evolution, and it has helped dogs survive.

If you have two related dogs, there is nothing to stop them from breeding unless you intervene to prevent it. That’s one of the reasons why most pet owners do have their dogs spayed or neutered unless they plan to have puppies.

As we have seen in the foregoing, there are factors that influence whether a dog recognizes its siblings or parents later. I experienced so, which has the possibility of spending their young weeks and months with its dog family can do that later. The time spent with conspecifics affects the kind of relationship developed. This is another reason for not to separate the puppy from his family too early.

P.S.: Imagine, you’re now reading your dog instead for the better understanding and a happy, longer living you together. I hope you enjoyed today’s topic and picked up some food for thought. Don’t forget to share your opinion in the comments. Thank You!

Is Context Between Dog’s Health and Water?

When it comes to the water’s role in health, we know that no live organism can exist, operate without water. That’s how it is, an instance of that is that the water is the main component of the human body. An adult human’s body contains around 60-70% water. For example, if one weights 176 pounds, his body contains about 14,3 gal water. Well, you may find similar rates in our dogs, too. So, there is a straight context between dog’s health and the water.

Water Needs

dog-drinks-waterAs researchers have shown, your family dog’s physique comprises around of 70% water. By losing all the fats and 50% of protein of its body has less impact than he cannot get water for two days or more. It can be fatal for him if the water in your canine’s body is reduced to one tenth.

With a view to survive, an adult canine requires – at a minimum – two milliliters of water projected to each pound weight daily. That’s when considering 1 ounce contains 30 milliliters of water. However, that two milliliters are only enough for your animal to produce urine within his body.

Importance of Water

Without sufficient water vital for urine providing, your family dog or whatever canine won’t be able to live. When you are providing an infinite amount of water, your canine will consume a lot more than that two millimeters required. That is particularly true if you always provide fresh water to him.

Handing your doggie merely the smallest amount of water each day could also be sufficient for him to outlive, although not for long. Shortage in water injures the system and terminates its functions progressively. He’ll ultimately become weak, come down with a disease, and decease.

Water Utilizing Ways In Dog’s Body

The advantage of providing your family dog enough water compared to the smallest amount wanted is that its system can use that multi-mode (just like in humans).

1) The water facilitates the digesting and the process of taking nutrients from the food.

2) Our dog’s system is using the water to eliminate fuel, and that is transformed into energy.

3) You can more easily sustain the standard temperature of your dog’s physique by ingesting enough water as well.

4) Consuming sufficient water replaces the fluids which might be lost in our dog’s body by excretion.

5) The water also requires to mix various kinds of chemical substances within dog’s systems. Namely, the distinct chemical reactions ensure the dissolving and remodeling those components.

6) The water also is a transport device at the same time. It takes the nutrients to the cellular structures and in addition carries poisonous waste material from the cells to the organs for correct processing. With the lack of water, these organs won’t be able to eliminate toxic things off of the dog’s body.

7) In addition, the water is required to control the acid balance within the blood flow.

8) You may know the evergreen saying goes something like “Beauty comes from inside.” This applies to our dog’s mental health as well. Namely, if he or she is happy, and balanced, the vitality is radiating from every pore. That’s can be seen through its eyes, skin, nail, and hair condition too. And the sufficient water consumption has a big role in that as well.

My Take on It

Perhaps you can perceive from the above that the water is nearly always necessary for each function occurs within your favorite’s body. And as a result of its versatility plus the degree to which it’s utilized, water is regarded to be a crucial nutrient that’s needed for all kinds of dogs.

If your animal doesn’t get to water s/he can be died within a few days because of its dehydration. However, he can withstand the starvation; he will only be caught up by the fate when he runs out half its original weight. It’s obvious, there is a significant difference between the consequences of the lack of the two.

So giving my dog anything to eat; homemade food, meat, dry food or canned meals, I make sure fresh water is in front of her always. Especially in the summer when I’m out for several hours, I put enough fresh water in a couple of shaded places to let her drink. I never let the water bowl being empty, and I recommend you to do so as well.

P.S.: By reading this article, I hope you gained some insight related the role of water in your dog’s health. The comment section is open for your remark or question, take advantage of it. Thank You!

Dog Tails Should Be Docked?

I’m experiencing some debate – especially in Europe – when it comes to dog tails should be docked or not. There are people who feel that it is unnecessary or even cruel to dock a dog’s tail. They think that tails are docked for purely cosmetic reasons, and that practice should be stopped. However, the tails of dogs of some breeds have been docked for centuries for non-cosmetic reasons. Here’s why.

Throughout history, the tails of some breeds have been docked for different reasons. At various times some dog owners were taxed by their governments depending on how many dogs with tails they had so dog owners docked the tails of some breeds in order to avoid paying the taxes.

pointer-dog-with-docked-tailEven after the taxes were repealed, owners continued to dock the breeds they had begun docking for other reasons. A great number of breeds were and are docked to prevent injury. This applies particularly to hunting dogs.

Health Aspects

Dogs who work in the field are prone to collecting burrs and foxtails in heavy cover as well as hurting their tails while wagging. This leads to wounds, pain and infection. Docking the tail prevents these injuries.

For other breeds, tails are traditionally docked for the sake of cleanness. People want to keep feces from becoming attached to long fur. For some guarding and herding breeds, tails have been docked to prevent injury while working.

In virtually every case where a breed standard calls for tail docking there is a reason for the docking relating to concern for the dogs’ welfare.

Opponents of tail docking claim that dogs today could be allowed to have long tails or could be bred to be tailless. Dog owners, breeders, and plenty of veterinary surgeons are an opponent of this opinion. They share their point of view that if docking discontinued, the canines would be forced to suffer.

As for breeding dogs without a tail, here is an example. In one breed, the Braque du Bourbonnais, French breeders tried to breed for taillessness and ended up with an extinct breed. They are only now trying to bring their breed back from extinction by breeding half-bred dogs.

They were so focused on breeding for dogs with no tails that their numbers dwindled to zero. The same thing can happen to any breed that becomes fixated on one trait.

The Tail Docking

Tail docking is done on puppies when they are just a few days old. So, there is no evidence that they feel any more pain from tail docking than puppies feel from having their dew claws removed.

The American Kennel Club states the further supports tail docking, as well as ear cropping and dew claw removal. In breeds that call for dogs with docked tails, individual parent clubs decide whether or not dogs with long tails are allowed to be shown at dog shows.

In the UK tail docking is banned except for working dogs used for their traditional job of work.  Any dog is a working canine if a vet has certified that the animal is likely to be used for work. That relates in connection with the following law enforcement, armed forces’ activities, emergency rescue, lawful pest control, and the legal shooting of animals.

The Canadian Kennel Club, like the AKC, supports the practice of tail docking when performed on young puppies. So, around the world numerous Kennel Clubs acknowledge approximately fifty dog breeds docked traditionally.

My Observations

boxer-with-docked-tailI dealt with Vizsla and Doberman, and Boxer dog was in our household too. I experienced they wag their tails very intensively because of being hyperactive. These dogs’ tail develops without hair, so there is nothing to protect it. Moreover; the skin is thin there. Due to these things, they are quite vulnerable.

The animal smashed its tail to something, and at best, it became “only” bloody by beating up to the bone, at worse it will be broken. Unfortunately, I have seen more of these cases during decades. That tremendously hurt the adult dog, after all – by medical recommendation – the cutting was applied.

Similarly, to us humans, that wound is much painful, and the healing takes considerably longer. In contrast, newborn puppies have soft cartilages, and nervous system isn’t developed, so they feel nothing. I have seen that the shepherd cut the tail of newborn little lambs.

The little newborns didn’t notice that, namely they didn’t squeak at all. They romped around as if nothing had happened to them. Albeit, they’re more developed at their birth than dog puppies. And I’m an advocate of the “rational” animal protection.

P.S.: Share your experiences related to this topic. Thank You!

Dewclaws Should Be Remained or Removed?

I’ve heard already different opinions about that dogs’ dewclaws should be remained or removed. The topic came up recently when a Jack Russell Terrier owner asked for my advice on this. I asked the lady about the age and health of her doggie as well as behavioral habits, and housing conditions. As her pooch is three months old, I recommend her to consult her vet and when the time of spaying her animal arrived, perform it as well. But let’s look at the matter more closely.

What Are Dewclaws Actually?

dog-paws-with-dewclawsMost dogs are born with a vestigial fifth claw on the inside of front paw. This is called a “dewclaw.”  In the United States, for most breeds, this tiny dewclaw is removed soon after birth. In Europe there are people who believe that dewclaws should not be removed.

On that breeds where dewclaws aren’t character types, usually only single (i.e. one piece on one foot) used to appear. And it is very rare bony,  usually is just a piece of skin with tiny claws. It is easily separated, so breeders often truncate that on newborn puppies.

Why Removing Is Recommended?

Dewclaws have traditionally been removed for reasons of safety for your dog. In many breeds, the dewclaw is attached rather high up on the leg, far above the other nails on the paw. It does not wear down during use.

The dewclaw can grow big and become quite sharp. Thus, it’s much easier for it to be entangled on things than the other nails. When the dewclaw get stuck itself on something, it can injure your dog. In the worst cases, it can rip or tear right off your dog’s leg. I also have seen examples of this earlier.

Of course, all of a dog’s nails – including the dewclaw if remained – should be trimmed regularly. That will help prevent the nails from catching on anything. But, even when the dewclaw is kept trimmed it is often set off from the leg and likely to get stuck on something.

Most people in the United States believe that the dewclaw does not serve a useful purpose anymore. Furthermore, that it is simplest to remove it soon after birth in order to avoid injuries.

When Remaining Is Accepted

I’ve to say that I met a few French sheepdogs. They were Great Pyrene (Chien de Montagne des Pyrénées), Beauceron (Berger de Beauce) and Briard (Berger de Brie) breeds. These animals have a dewclaw not only on their first but on rear legs as well.

These French shepherd dogs have five toes in their front feet, and set six toes on the rear. That’s their breed standard and they use those dewclaws sometimes. However, these dewclaws are bony and stable, settled at least 4-6 centimeters high above the pads.

There are some people who maintain the beliefs that dogs use the dewclaw to balance themselves when making sharp turns while running. And I am inclined to accept this.

Namely, I’ve seen agility competitions where the dewclaws were beneficial. Simply, they can grip when dogs are jumping or hitting the ground. So, the dewclaws can help in the tight turns that significantly influence the scoring.

The Declaws Removing Action

Dewclaws are usually removed when puppies are three or four days old. A breeder typically takes the mother into the vet’s office to be checked after whelping. And the  pups go along at the same time to have their dewclaws removed.

The entire process of removing the dewclaws on a litter of puppies only takes a few minutes. The vet places a hemostat on the dewclaw to make the area numb. And then he picks dewclaws off at the joint. A small suture is applied. The puppies are ready to go home very shortly.

It may happen that the dewclaws are left on, and they need to be removed later. However, then the process does become much more serious and requires surgery. The removing method is similar as above mentioned, but the vet applies Neosporin and bandaging over the wound.

In this respect, it’s a lot easier, and in the best interest of your puppy, to remove them during the first week. Anyway, in Europe there is some opposition to removing dewclaws just as there is opposition to docking tails and cropping ears. They consider dewclaw removal “mutilation” of the dog.

The European Convention for the Protection of Pet Animals opposes many traditional methods of caring for dogs and other pets. However, the tenets of the convention have not been accepted by all European countries.

My Take on It

As we can perceive from above, the picture isn’t unambiguous. I know hunters and people actively working with dogs in Europe. They usually truncate not only the dewclaws (if they appeared at all), but the fifth toes of the front legs as well.

As for my dogs, I’ve made removed dewclaws by a vet always. When I did breeding before, the situation was similar. I’ve stopped the breeding long ago but always made removed my dogs’ dewclaws.

If your dog doesn’t break it down, and it doesn’t cause damage, you’ll need to check periodically its developing. If it is too big, or it hinders the move – possibly it may have been turned back like an eagle’s claw – it must pick off with a nail clipper tweezers. A professsional groomer or your vet will do that in no time.

P.S.: It’s your turn: Has the topic attracted your attention? What are your thoughts or experiences about removing or remaining of dewclaws? Speak your mind in the comments below. Thank You!

A Good Dog House Is Unreachable Dream?

My family always kept different domestic animals, as I look back to my childhood. And each animal was in its place, for example, the cow in the cowshed, hens in the henhouse and so on. Our Swan, the Kuvasz dog had a dog house, to relax she went there.

So, without doubt if you have a dog, then he needs some asylum. You need to think some aspects when it comes to giving a nook to your favorite. By reading this entry you’ll know the necessities to provide a right doggie house your furry pal deserves.

Characteristics of a Good Dog House

A good dog house means a harborage for the canine living outdoors, like an apartment for a man. As their lodging needs are different for all humans, this applies in the case of dogs, too. That is, the question isn’t whether to have our dog its own house or not.

Frame-of-a-good-dog-houseYour dog just expects a place where he can feel itself being safe. He wants a shadow from heat caused the sun and a protection against wind and precipitation. For you the essence is what’s the house material, the structure and where you put it?

Let me to refer to my childhood again.

As I remember Swan’s dog house was big enough for her. The walls, floor and the roof were made from plank and inside was lined with straw during the winter. The house was standing on six inch legs. The roof was slightly stretched beyond the walls so the rain isn’t washing them.

Of course, these days you also can use more modern materials. If your canine lives in the yard / garden, be sure to have a well isolated, rain-and wind-free house. For ease of assembly, it’s the best if the house walls are wood panels with insulation.

What Size Is Needed?

The dog house’s necessary size depends on your canine’s dimension. That’s size is right if your animal can walk in, can turn back and can lie down. Another principle is he should be able to heat it with his own body. Therefore, before you go to buy a dog house – or materials for construction – you should know its measurements.

For this reason, you need to measure your dog’s height at the withers, and his length. Bear in mind if the dog house is smaller than required, then the dog cannot be rounded comfortably. Obviously, a small Spaniel needs smaller dog house than the Doberman.

Note: Before someone called me soulless for outdoor keeping a Spaniel, I’d say something. The Spaniel dog was breed originally as hunting / retrieving games from water or land. So, anno, it was a requirement to bear those conditions.

Today’s Spaniels also can sustain outdoors as well. He needs a well insulated dog house is protected from the wind. Plus a heat curtain is an addition over the doorway. Furthermore, you need to let its coat grow by the cold weather.

Back to the dog house size. There are dogs like Caucasian Shepherd Dog, Hungarian Komondor or a Newfoundland. Obviously, these animals need the greatest place, around 35 x 40 inches.

The best is, when the dog house’s door is at one end of the long side. This way the wind cannot blow through the house, but you can make sure a wind-free nook in a corner. Make sure that the door of the dog house is south-facing in all circumstances.

What the Dogs Prefer

The todays dog’s ancestor was a predator, living in caves generally. They were less sensitive and had a suchlike coat that was enough to bear weather conditions. However, there are some things that didn’t change after a period of time, either.

Generally, dogs prefer those places which have exact boundaries on many sides and free from drafts and wind. They like if their place isn’t too hot or too cold, and slightly falls apart. But there is one important condition you, the owner should ensure because that belongs to the dog’s nature.

Namely, your dog wants to check the entrance or gate and wants to follow the family’s life, too. Your dog tries to be there you are and where the life is happening. Namely, the most important thing for him is being a part of the company.

Where to Place the Doggie House

Where to put the doggie house has its particular importance. Namely, I experienced if you aren’t careful enough concerning it, your favorite simply is avoiding the nook you intended to give him. His own place means a refuge for your dog, where he can feel himself safe.

You shouldn’t place the dog house directly on the ground. Put it to a pedestal, so the floor doesn’t get wet, and don’t be wetted from the ground, too. As a liner, the horsehair mattress is the most right, because the sponge gets wet when the dog lies down with its wetted coat.

As mentioned above, the dog likes to check the door of the family home as well as the street gate where strangers can come. He is also interested in what happens in most of the gardens. For these reasons, the best place is to put the dog house there where he can fulfill all these tasks without difficulty.

What to do if you keep your dog inside

If the dog lives in your flat, then make sure a place for him in a draft-free and quiet corner. There he can retreat away and no one can interfere him. A bean bag or a foam is ideal as bed.

Namely, those are soft and retain the warmth of the body of the animal, as well as easy to wash. The braided dog beds with a pillow are specifically aesthetic. Anyway, there is a suchlike dog house on the market that you can use inside your house.

If it is natural for you to have a safe and proper furnished living space, then you’re able to understand how a nook is important for your dog. He is your family member; he defends you, your family and your properties. Please, appreciate his service with a good doggie house!

P.S.: Are your dogs living inside or outdoor? How did you solve your pets’ placement? They feel themselves comfortable inside the dog house?
It would be great to read your opinion in the comments. Thank You!

Labrador Retriever – Deserved Popularity?

The Labrador Retriever dog listed as the primary dog at the start of 2013, according to the AKC registering. This breed enjoys the attention of dog lovers due to its properties. He’s amicable in direction to other pets and strangers as well as playfulness. The Labrador is a tender-hearted animal, and excellent companion.

The History of the Labrador Retriever Dog Breed

Labrador-retriever-on-grassThis dog breed doesn’t belong to the ancient dog varieties. When it comes its origin, imagine yourself in the places of fishers of earlier times. You can find the Labrador territory at Northwest of Newfoundland, Canada.

There were very hard life conditions when English fishermen settled in Newfoundland within the 1500s. The mooring with the fishing boats was a harmful procedure on the wild and whimsical shores.

Therefore, fishermen were looking after a help and started to use the so called St. John’s dog. And this animal became worthy to the advanced trust. They trained this canine to jump into the water from the fishing boat.

The dog’s task was to haul the line of the fishing net to other fishermen on the shore. Then, those people drew out the toil full of fish onto the shore. And while the coastal fishermen dealt with ample catches then, the St .John’s dog swam back for the next line.

Furthermore, he guarded the fishing ship when the crew and the captain felt inclined to land ashore. If his master dropped something into the water, his task was to “fish it” and bring back.

This way retrieving was in his blood, already at that time. And it had to have a thick and water-repellent coat to survive in the cold, icy water. And the fishermen presumably developed that St. John’s canine further.

They didn’t have to go far to find a partner to their breeding. Namely, the merchants brought dogs from other places, and the native Indians also kept canines. Due to lack of written records from this period we can only make some guess.

So, a Portugal water dog, the French St. Hubert’s hound and a European pointer equally may be among the hypothetic ancestors. As a consequence of these crossings, two dog types created. The one was the today’s known Newfoundland dog.

And the other type became the direct predecessor of today’s Labrador Retriever. People mentioned him first time during the year of 1822, as the courageous and indispensable assistant to fishermen of Newfoundland.

Around that time, the English notabilities became interested in these animals. So, the fishermen grabbed the chance to sell their fishing dogs increasingly. Shortly afterwards, the Labrador almost disappeared from its native land.

It partly was because of the severe local taxes what a few fisher could and willing to pay. On the other hand, the authorities created the English quarantine laws. With these laws they were putting an end to the imports.

And along with that they put an end to the extra earnings of dog keeping and exporting fishermen as well. Fortunately, the breeding of these dogs continued in Britain. Therefore, the Labrador Retriever denomination was widespread before the end of 1800s.

The English Kennel Club formally acknowledged the Labrador dog breed in 1903. After that the American Kennel Club followed the lead of EKC within the year of  1917.

Surprisingly, the Labrador Retriever reached the status of the most well-liked dog breed in 1991. And since then he stayed continuously top listed in many countries even today.

My Addition

labrador-retriever-and-german-shepherd-crossI have a Labrador-German Shepherd mixture dog presently. She is six years and eleventh months old. It is interesting to observe as the two different character is combining in one animal. There is some of both, and I think that is giving her advantages.

As you know, the Labrador Retriever is primarily used for retrieving the hunter’s prey. Despite that, it is the most popular family dog. What it doesn’t really suitable for is the work of the guarding service.

The aggressiveness is missing from this dog breed completely. Consequently, he will be ready to make coffee to even the burglar. However, for me, a good watchdog skill is very important. I had a German Shepherd before, so I know the two breeds separately.

And, the German Shepherd dog’s guarding ability got a role here. I’m lucky to have a dog mix which is partly playful enough, obedient and tolerant. On the other hand, she is a brave watchdog, who has developed property protection capability.

All in all, I’m a satisfied dog fancier who doesn’t want to change her for all the world either.

How Our Puppy Learns Human Language?

How our puppy learns human language is depending both you and him. I think back to a case happened earlier. I once rescued a puppy presumably they threw out from their car as a surplus. We – my son and I – did some errands using a car to arrange everything faster. Meanwhile, the rain began to fall, and we perceived this puppy standing on the roadside.

She drenched totally. I felt sorry for this poor soul, so we stopped and picked up her into a blanket on the back seat of our car. We brought her to the vet – for examining and treating – and then to our home. I left her to become acclimatized to circumstances before starting her education.

The Learning Basis Of Puppies

The study defined by the psychology is as the change of behavior and long-term behavioral potential, which arises from the continuous exercise. Dogs are among the few organisms that retain the ability to play and learn throughout their lives.

Naturally, the most effective learning is at an early age, that is closely related to the formation and volume to the brain. Therefore, the puppies – almost from their birth – are constantly monitoring the man, his actions and habits. The more time they spend around their human companion, they can remember further correlation based on several observations.

And by calculating the consequences to their actions, they adapt their reactions to these. Therefore, after a period of time is sufficient for them the smallest sign and gesture. They’ll know immediately what you will do it, what will happen the next minute?

Dogs don’t just visually monitoring us humans. They are also listening with great attention to acoustic signals people produce. These are probably the third most important sources of information for them. The first two are odors, and body language signals are coming from people living in their vicinity.

How the Cohabitation Began With Our Puppy?

I need to mention incidentally, I also have had puppies from my own breeding before her, and they were with us for 60 days. Meantime I intended to get a place for them on the dog-loving families. Namely, I strived to achieve the offsprings leave my kennel fair way, in good healthy conditions.

The puppy in question required a few days to be familiar with us and her new home. In the first day she was looking for his littermates and her mother by crying a little. But she consoled by getting plenty of love and caress from us and my other dog also patronized her. After the acquaintance week, she seemed integrated into us.

This little canine was a surplus somewhere, but she had a great time within our home. The thrown out from a car left a deep mark in her soul. Due to that she avoided stepping voluntarily into ours for a long time. But, we perceived – maybe due to the care which benefited from the treatment we provided – our puppy listened to us.

How Did Our Puppy Learn?

Speaking about our puppy, she realized that she is safe here. And we perceived she wants to learn our language (figuratively speaking). After all studying comes naturally for dogs, mainly in their early ages. Studying comes a natural way once you educate a puppy to link some phrases and behaviors.

This manner they can learn in depth vocabulary just by listening and watching to you. I observed before, that each puppy – like us people – learns on its own pace. Puppies will be able to learn faster when they see what we’re doing and hear our language sound at the same time.

For instance, our puppy learned shortly that if I put on a certain pair of footwear that is a sign of the going to go to walk. Our pooch is primed to answer me, so I educated a phrase to associate with the motion. Those were “We take a walk” or “Let’s go to car drive.” Both brought the result.

It’s great if our puppy performs an activity that we really want him to study to do on our command. We can increase the efficiency to give the name to that action. For example, each time I saw our puppy sitting calmly – even if I did not tell her it to – I said, “good sit.” The same applies to other commands also: “come,” “down,” “bring it” and such.

Mistakes Keep Away From Is Advisable

In the human language learning process we may simply encourage accidentally the conduct issues of our puppy or worsen them. Due to that I list some manners new pooch owners can turn into their own worst enemies – as I experienced:

A) Providing an excessive amount of freedom very soon for your puppy.

B) Permitting his misbehavior to develop into a custom.

C) Allowing your pet to suppose he is the boss.

D) Thinking a crate is ferocious so you reject to use it in training.

Our puppy can and prone to learn the human language consisting of visual and voice elements. But like in the case of kids, our canine requires structure and guidelines in the process. They need praise after they do proper and discipline when they make some mistake.

At the same time, our puppy needs a place to feel itself safe. And, it’s advisable to use a crate or secure room to prevent damaging behavior. Mainly, if you possibly can’t oversee it. All of those help you to ensure him the structure it must turn into your excellent companion.
