A Belgian Malinois or a German Shepherd Is the Better?

Hello again!

belgian-malinois-in-water

Malinois is exercising in the water

Hmm… provocative question, isn’t it? It may seem my intention is to stir up conflicts between the Belgian Malinois owners and the enthusiasts of German Shepherd. However, this assumption would be far from the truth. On the contrary, my opinion is that dog owners should stick together. Then what’s the point of the question?

Well, not the first time is that I hear such questions and argumentation about dog breeds. And naturally, any kind of dog owner may be biased against their own species even within the same breed.

Anyone who already has read my website, knows that I’m dealing with different dogs more than sixty years. And I also bred dogs before 1980, plus I’m a frequent visitor to dog shows, exhibitions and competitions.

Consequently, I know quite a number of dog breeds. And I was lucky enough to keep a German Shepherd for twelve years before. Furthermore, a Belgian Malinois puppy enjoys my hospitality at present. That’s why I intended to say something in this question.

And I’ve seen equally Malinois and GSD at police work, too. That’s why I intended to say something in this question.

Belgian Malinois Similarities With German Shepherd

Objectively speaking, each, the Malinois and the GSD are the family member of the sheepdog group. Both were the “helping hand” for shepherds gazing flocks on pastures of all-round Europe for quite a while now.

belgian_malinois_K-9

Belgian Malinois K9 Police Dog

Both these breeds have been used as working dog on different fields of life in the twentieth century. Police and military forces, emergency and security organizations used them within Belgium, France, Germany, Netherlands and other European countries.

Additionally, lots of citizens also choose species of both breeds for a home-guarding purpose. We are close to the truth saying that both these breeds share a similar role in people’s life.

It’s a fact that the Malinois and the GSD have been in the highest ten position among the most recommended canine breeds on the planet in recent years. When considering their temperament, we can only say each of them received a top degree of self-determination.

Both the Belgian Malinois and the German Shepherd are vigilant, brainy and true-hearted resulting from which they work as admirable guard dogs. Each canine is diligent when busy regarding their job. Therefore, they’re valued highly due to these traits.

What the Differences Are?

Well, let’s say that we are viewing the world championship of swimming. The two hundred meters medley is happening now. We see that two diverse swimmers reach the finish line with a difference of a hundredth of a second apart.

Would this mean that one swimmer is worse than the other? I don’t think so. After all, both swimmers are there on the podium. However, you are right, there is a difference between them, even it’s a minor one.

Why this little disparity is there? The reason for that can be many things like preparation, stamina, will, etc. A plus momentum may be that the one is more suitable for the butterfly, and the other one for the breast stroke.

Suppose, one of them turns with a special technique; the other has better breathe method. One has lighter body weight; the other’s muscles are more untied. My friend, things go similarly with dogs, too.

A) Both are fantastic working dog. However, the Malinois need a lot of exercise as they are a higher-energy dog. Exercise for only an hour or two a day won’t satisfy their requirement due to their greater inner drive.

Taking a typical person having a 9 to 5 job, five days a week, probably won’t have time or energy for a Malinois. It’s about having the free time and stamina to work them hard to make them happy everyday.

Tired German Shepherd

B) The attribute – many agree – could be that the Belgian Malinois, is, nevertheless, noticeably faster canine in comparison to the German Shepherd. As well as the Malinois has heaps of energy plus agility, which exceeds the similarities in the GSD.

You can observe an inclination related to that in later years. Namely, the Malinois comes to the fore over its counterpart when need arises for police K9 or military use. In that obviously plays role that this dog never gives up.

C) The German Shepherd has also been considered to be a less curious than the Malinois. For example, my GSD was able to be lying calmly for hours.

The Malinois I’m fostering now can’t survive with not having to do anything for a long time. So, this could make it a little difficult to dealing with particularly for novice owners.

D) Additionally, the Belgian Malinois requires is calling for permanent socialization. It’s not because they forget easily. The reason is they think themselves the equal parties with you and checking boundaries.

They are capable dwelling outdoors, but value more highly to be beside your family. Moreover, this animal gets along well with other canines rather than forgotten by itself in the cage or kennel.

The greater amount of you are strolling with a Belgian Malinois and give time with him or her; it’ll understand you better plus what is that you anticipate from it.

The GSD, nevertheless, is okay so long as it retains receiving its meals everyday. Alternatively, the Belgian carry out its tasks simply from respect if you deserved and acquired that.

E) The Malinois prefer to be involved in just about any activity all the time. These dogs are preferred to work in training, however, don’t like when that takes them too lengthy.

Therefore, in case you are a newcomer, it’ll be simpler to handle a German Shepherd. That’s because they are more manageable for his or her owner.

F) The health aspect also speaks about the Malinois advantage. Unfortunately, hip problems are frequent with the GSD, due to their forced breeding. So, if you want a capable working dog, you should check lot of puppies until you find a healthy one.

My Conclusion

Each breed includes species that meet certain needs better than another. In my opinion, not any breed is worse in comparison with other. I know from experience that individual canines guarantee a difference, not the breed.

Therefore, it doesn’t make sense to bash any dog breed and only praise the other. They were all bred to achieve different goals; this should be taken note of. What is more, the dog owners, trainers also aren’t alike.

Consequently, it’s up to you taking that what do you really expect from the dog in question. Choose the German Shepherd if you want a more patient, simple in the contact companion. Alternatively, take the Belgian Malinois wanting a more lively and intelligent working dog.

All the best,

Alex Sparrow

What Can Be Dogs’ New Year’s Resolution?

Dog Lovers, Happy New Year!

The year of 2013 left us, and the usher 2014 stepped out from behind the curtain. And this is the perfect time for most individuals look back to the 12 months has gone. People also have become a habit of creating a New Year’s resolution. When we make such resolutions, we want to prove to ourselves something.

For example, we lay the cigarettes because they are unhealthy, and we will be successful in that. Or, possibly, we start dieting to fit into the old clothing again, sitting in the closet’s deep. It could happen that we want to spend more time in a sport, because we feel a lot of sitting work or drudgery increasingly destroying our bodies.

But, I played with an idea of what it would be if our dogs also make their New Year’s resolution. Please, visualize as your furry friends are reflecting on the alternatives they’ve made last year. Would they change something in 2014 or possibly not?

Dogs’ New Year’s Resolution

I’ve imagined what would be their resolution of our present dogs and who left us in the last decades. Well, let’s start with the youngest.

new-year's-resolution-asking-lisa

* Zizi is our eight-year-old rescued Labrador/German Shepherd mix, and her resolution could be something like this: “I resolve not to bark all times when thunder and lightning are happened. I know I need to be neglecting towards them, but somehow I felt indicated to bark. My loving owner and mentor tried to cease this habit. He did a consulting with his vet and achieved some results. This family loves me very much and I would like to honor their effort with some more progress.”

* Roll was the senior fellow when Zizi came to us. She also was a rescued canine. Unfortunately, she left us and vent to over the rainbow bridge.  Her mortal remains are buried in our garden. If she were alive, maybe this would be her New Year’s resolution: “I resolve not to bark on the mailman in the future. I totally understand that he has a job and has to provide his family. And if I think about this issue seriously I realize I sometimes may be reacted a too harsh way by leaping over the fence and barking loudly. I certainly did not seem a civilized dog, and that will change surely.”

* Nero also was a rescued mongrel, and his ancestors were totally unknown and Roll was brought here after his death in his twelve years. He finally rests in eternal peace in our garden. If he were alive, his resolution would be something like this: “I resolve not to dig holes under the bushes anymore. I know how upset was the wife of my master to discover the holes repeatedly. I heard many times individuals proclaiming that nobody would undertake such a trenching machine like I am, but I resolve to verify they are wrong.”

These came to my mind while I watched how Lisa and Zizi are playing joyfully in our yard. As far as my New Year’s resolution concerned I promise to be their loving and responsible owner and teacher.

My dog lover Friends, what would be your dog’s resolution to 2014?

How to Stimulate Your Dog Mentally?1

Hi Everyone,

As a preliminary point, I inform you that Lisa, our new German Shepherd mix puppy got her second de-worming. Our rescued favorite was 14 weeks old and weighed 17 pounds yesterday. Spending many times together with pets you can stimulate your dog mentally. The two dogs get along very well with each other, the older one (Zizi) almost completely reborn due to the puppy. And today’s topic is the ways to stimulate your dog psychologically to achieve a desired  behavior.

stimulate-your-dog-mentally -jack-russelDoes your dog always bark, chew or weeding the flower in your garden? If whatever your answer is yes, then it’s advisable to reorganize your everyday life with your dog. Namely, behind of numerous behavioral problems – such as barking, chewing, digging, etc. – is the isolation, boredom and insufficient exercise and mental stimulation. Unfortunately, as we’re all getting busier, sometimes less and less time, and energy remains for our favorite.

Despite this, humans expect certain behavior from their dogs in the everyday life, common work, sport and training. You can achieve the realization of this behavior if you provide the physical, mental and emotional conditions equally. Namely, this species (Canis familiaris) is required to fulfill these to be a mentally balanced dog in the modern civilized environment as well.

Our Dog’s Requirements

1) Proper food. The food eaten affects the general health, mood, resistance, physical and mental endurance and the available age. Food has to be tasty, and must comply with the medical and biological requirements are important in the animal development.

2) Socialization. The next requirement for dogs is getting in different social connections of the real world. That means to be familiarized with outer stimuli in their 4 – 16 weeks of age. Namely, those will increase their resistance to stress and determine their lives in the future.

3) Learning. I get questions daily: “Can you teach my dog to …” And sometimes they ask so absurdities, which shouldn’t teach a dog if s/he doesn’t get housing conditions adequate to its race, and wasn’t  socialized from its puppy age. Because to raise a dog should know the best by his owner (pack leader).

4) Movement. For example, a terrier tends to look forever, rushing move from one scent to another. For the greyhound only the real galloping is the satisfactory movement. You cannot expect from northern dog breeds to walk slowly on a loose leash against their instinct. The list could go on.

5) Task. Experience has shown that the reason of significant part of behavioral problems is that your dog is bored. If your dog gets a job, you expect liability from him. If you give him work, then you can increase the animal’s self-confidence, and it can be motivated emotionally, too.

6) Playing. Fun and humor are the two most important components of a dog’s play. With 10 -15 minutes daily common playing, you can enhance your dog’s concentration ability, and intellectual development. As a result of regular, shared player activity your pet well be physically and mentally balanced.

7) Grooming. All dogs require from the owner certain grooming care and assistance throughout his or her life. During the daily exercise or strolling their coats, paws can pick up some grime, dirt, debris. Their eyes, ears, teeth also may require care to prevent illnesses. A well-groomed animal can be healthier, and you can stimulate him mentally easier.

8) Healthcare. Your dog’s health care requirements are constantly changing during his life. The needs differ for a 2-3 month-old pup, an adolescent canine, and your aging four-legged companion, too. Consequently, all dog owners should provide the adequate animal health-care for his canine.

Ways of Stimulate Your Dog Mentally

You may be wondering, why I listed the above elements here. Every above components help you to motivate your dog mentally. They form the foundation of that. I do understand, there are many explanations why you can’t go out with your canine to get some exercise, for instance. Apart from that, you can do many things to keep your dog from going unmanageable nowadays.

A sure way to stimulate your dog mentally is providing him diverse toys. Encouraging your animal to play occupies his attention and this can keep him away from mischief. Be sure to supply numerous various kinds of toys: ropes, toys, stuffed animals and “wear-proof chews,” and alike.

The toys called “interactive” are available in different shapes nowadays. “Interactive” signifies that your furry-friend needs to take some action – get pertaining to that toy – to allow it to be work. For example, there is a toy makes fragrant bubbles in your animal’s preferred scents once your pet presses on various areas of that device.

That’s all today. In the second part, we’ll discuss methods and devices to stimulate your dog mentally according to your goals.

Why the Puppy Biting During Playing?

Hi Everyone,

As my readers possibly know, we rescued a new German Shepherd mix puppy. And the puppy biting is the topic we’ll discuss now. Namely, Lisa is a very lovable, quite agile doggie that discovered her new living environment totally. She is learning very quickly, so for example, the biting bent is reduced by now.

Are you in the same shoes? Did you ever spend some time playing with a litter of puppies?  Then you’ve a chance to be familiar with something similar than handling a school class of piranhas! You may be attacked on every side by sharp little teeth, and they actually hurt!

Possible Reasons of Puppy Biting

Sure, during playing puppies use to bite. Why they do this? I often use to say that the puppies are not any others in their behavior than furry kids. When you’ve ever spent any time observing kids play, you definitely are aware of many behavior types they show.

Let us discuss a) natural to people they hit one another. They cry; they run; they get offended; they titter. And b) they venture upon play, which gets ready kids for issues they faced later in their lives. The majority of similar things are correct with puppies, too.

Once you watch young doggies playing you’ll see them attacking one another head-on. You’ll see them when they’re ambushing each other. You’ll see them taking part in stalking conduct. The majority of these behaviors are customary to dogs.

The hunting conduct also belongs to them. The younger animal shows hunter behavior, and one of the elements is the puppy biting. You’ll experience this once you try to play with them and caress them. Consequently, they have caught you as one other thing only.

In fact, puppies additionally bite once they play as a result of; like infants, they put every existing thing they can into their mouths. They love to chew and taste all the things. At the moment, when they start to get teeth, they prefer to make use of them frequently.

puppy-biting-during-playingBut, mainly, once they pursue play; they’re working towards being grown-up canines. Whether or not they are alone or along with their littermates, they choose to apply their needle-sharp little teeth in playing. Experiences show that puppies may additionally bite due to following causes:

* It may occur that their teeth might hurt or trouble them.

* Each time your puppy will get too excited, it could lose self-control and bite.

* Your pup simply bites and nips you when he wants to have your attention.

* If your little doggie is nasty, cussed, or aggressive, chances are he bites anyone around him.

Ceasing Puppy Bite

Once you take your new puppy home on you, you’ll have to educate the newcomer biting isn’t acceptable conduct. Obviously, his mom and siblings will commence to teach him a few of these lessons. This is also one reasons why not recommended to take a puppy home sooner than eight weeks of their age, anyway.

This teaching happens so that the young puppies will bite and nip each other playfully. That goes until one of them is nipped excessively, and he produces a high-pitched yell. The sufferer will stop taking part in playing, and the other who bit the victim is astonished.

And likewise, he stops playing for getting a while. Of course, in a very short time frame, each puppy begins the playing again. They are wrestling and playing around with each other. If one young doggie occurs to bite one other too hard, the same scenario happens and each puppy is inclined to withdraw for a bit.

This kind of feedback educates the offending pup that his bites could, in fact, damage other littermates as well as humans. So it’s the evidence that this pup makes use of changing his conduct. When your little favorite played too harshly or bit somebody excessively in his dog family, it’s probable that his littermates avoid playing with him.

If the puppy bit his mom, then she in all probabilities bit him back harder. She might have made him weep out. The puppy would get lessons from these occasions that it will likely was far better to behave and play a nice way.

Stop Biting Me

But, the pup needs to learn the something similar with humans. Once I carry our pup home, I use to train him or her anytime it bites me if I’m playing with him/her that I’ll cease playing with him/her for a minute. If she bites me once again, I stop the playing with her for an extended period.

I yelp when she bites me to make her be aware that she damages me. And I stop playing with her if she bites me again. Say I do this persistently then our new puppy will understand the message that I simply will not play with her if she continues biting.

It’s advisable to keep in mind that puppies don’t know any better though they do learn rapidly. Puppies discover ways to play softly and bite cautiously when enjoying themselves along with other pups or humans. That’s why pups need to get the proper responses to their tough play in time.

Otherwise, they (just like kids) by no means can be taught making the distinction between wrong and right. You possibly can educate your pup not to take a bite you very easily. It’s also wise to make sure to train him this identical lesson when you have kids among your family members.

WARNING! You ought to supervise to ensure that your little doggie doesn’t bite kids during playing since puppies don’t respect children always. However, if you simply specify your pup not to bite, the message will reach for his understanding.

I use to proceed giving our puppy feedback: yelping at that moment and withdrawing after solely mild hard bites. To put it differently, I tighten my guidelines just a little more. When our puppy bites me moderately, I yelp or ignore her for a brief time period.

Then I go back to play after a softer play has resumed. I continue to discourage our pup’s subsequent-hardest bites, and so forth, until she can play with my fingers fondly and manages the pressure of her biteAnd Id recommend doing the same for every new owner to reduce puppy biting.

What’s up to Plaque Forming on Dog Teeth?

Hi All!

There is a health issue many dog owners tend to be ignored, for some reason. Specifically, I mean by this the plaque forming on dog teeth. I’ll give you an example. I mentioned you; we rescued a German Shepherd mix puppy earlier. Lisa is a brown colored, very lively little animal, and got her first shot recently.

At the Vet Office

While we were at the vet’s waiting room, obviously, I was talking to other dog owners there. Four dogs were waiting for their turn, including ours. The physician was busy to remove the plaque and some tartar from the teeth of a Pug under anesthesia.

Among, one lady was waiting there had a little stature (approx 6 pounds) Chihuahua doggie. They followed the Pug, and the pooch went through his yearly health check and also got the annual shots. The vet said the lady that there is some plaque on the pooch’s teeth, so it likely requires a dental treatment next time.

But, the lady didn’t want to be subjected her tiny dog to that process. She applied Plaque Off earlier and forgot to buy more when it ran out, thus the plaque had time to develop. The little animal is on a xxxx small kibble nutrition, that’s the only manageable size by his small teeth.

Note: I deliberately didn’t write the name, because I don’t promote that product. But, what can be the solution in case like this? Can this be prevented at all? Well, here are some related tips you can choose from.

Healthy Chews for Dog Teeth

Healthy canine is unthinkable without fit dog teeth. In my experience, much depends on what type of dog food he or she consumes, how much and what your dog chews on. I observed that, tartar developing is come out more frequent for dogs eating canned food compared to those consume dry kibble. Another observation is that a not varied nutrition also helps the formation of plaque on teeth.

carrot-prevents-plaque-forming-on-dog-teethIn case you didn’t recognize so far, the carrot is an excellent chewing for humans and dogs equally. Eating carrots and other raw vegetables can be known as good for general health and specifically organs such as skin, eyes, gastrointestinal system and teeth.

Carrots are ideal for oral health, due to the fact they assist in removing meal particles. This way, they are reducing the risk of bacterial colonization. The carrots help to forestall tooth decay because they kill the possible dangerous bacteria around the dog teeth.

Frequent carrots consuming could improve the looks of skin, furs, nails and so on and likewise enhance dog eyes health. A significant advantage of chewing on carrots would be that they massage therapeutically your dog friend’s gums and improve blood flow within the gum tissues.

And, the carrots comprise vitamin A, which is certainly vital for sustaining wholesome tooth enamel.

Dog Dental Bones

The dog dental bones are a great option for oral well-being dietary. You may find a big variety of dental treats available on the market, so it is hard to choose just one particular model or type. Some depend on all-natural materials, and that’s an explicit plus when chemical compounds are a typical practice in canine related foods.

You can even find some that use a number of techniques for keeping teeth clean, together with an outer coating that surrounds a rawhide bone. If your furry pal has a susceptible stomach, make sure you’re knowledgeable with what their dental treats comprise. It may occur that aren’t what they look like at first sight.

Rawhide Bones

The rawhide bones known as the traditional method to assist brush the teeth of your dog. It is making the most from the dogs’ conventional chewing motions. Once you do provide your canine a goody of any type, be sure you keep constant observation. And take care not to allow them to swallow large items complete, because that could cause digestive problems.

I’d also mention chewing on cattle chew bones as a teeth cleaner I use for adult dogs. But, these tiny doggies possibly cannot do anything with it due to their little mouth.

Turning Into Raw

Another solution can be and works for many to give chicken wing. You may feed the tiny dog with cooked chicken breast at beginning. And gradually reduce the degree of cooking until you can give a raw chunk.

Perhaps, tiny canines needn’t be permitted to eat it wholly if you think the chunk is too big. But, a periodic good chewing on one piece would hopefully perform the task. It ought to be uncooked because bones within a cooked piece are far too sharp and fragile.

Tooth Brushing

Next tip is the common tooth brushing; it must be carried out no less than weekly, 3 times weekly is better anyway. Needless to say your dog’s body is not the same as humans, so it’s advisable to use dog tooth paste to keep your favorite pet healthy. Fortunately, you might discover a large number of tooth brush types available to perform the process simpler for each of you.

You may have that kind of small canine with little mouth as the lady has above. Then you’ve two choice. The first option is to use a baby’s tooth brush with logic oral pet gel. It really has a fairly little head on the brush, less than the dog tooth-brushes I’ve come across.

Anyway, to use a baby’s toothbrush has another benefit: you’re able to get around the back teeth as well. If that solution is not your cup of tee then you may use the other solution; the finger brush. Every finger brush is two sided; an extra knobbly along with a soft fine facet.

If the finger brush doesn’t work for you, then no panic. You can opt for a micro-fibre tooth cleaner. Actually, it has 12,000 times more fibres than any toothbrush. It removes the plaque and bacteria equally as the manufacturer says.

Bottom Line

I recommended the lady in question to start the frequent tooth brushing. My savings tip: try a kind of old-fashioned cotton plaster. Sticking it in your finger also does the job and the breath also will be fresher than before. Additionally, your four-legged mate will adapt to you poking within their mouth.

P.S.: My Friend, would you mind telling us your proven method preventing plaque forming on dog teeth? Which is best for you? Maybe I missed something, but I’m not ashamed to learn from people smarter than myself.

Thank you,

Alex

Can Your Dog’s Cost Be Lower?1

Greetings my readers, I hope you’re after a relaxing sleep. I’m pleased to tell you that Zizi (my older dog) and Liza (the new puppy) are in good health. The little rescued German Shepherd mix got the de-worming tablets and her first vaccination on Monday. The next is due after three weeks. As she isn’t perfectly protected yet, I wouldn’t bring him in direct close to other dogs. She has good appetite and is very nimble and docile. But, let’s get to the today’s topic.

I dealt with to be caring dog owner means frequent cash outflows here. I also indicated there that I’ll discuss about saving options on expenses we spend on our dogs. So, I grab the today’s occasion to meet my promise.

What Kind of Saving Tips Are Here

To lower costs isn’t easy, but there are possibilities to reduce our monthly dog expense effectively. I am in a position that I can give my dogs they require. However, there may be loving dog owners who are on budget. And yet they keep their dogs as their essential and devoted companions.

The following tips are primarily for those of you, but others can also benefit. But, first of all, I’ll tell you that saving on pet costs doesn’t mean in my interpretation to withdraw any necessary expenses vital to keeping our dog healthy. Far from it! I like the dogs better and appreciate all caring owners than to suggest such a thing.

The American Pet Products Association estimates pet owners will spend $55,53 billion on their animals this year. And the  food, supplies and veterinary costs make up more than 68 percent of this. The rest is divided among a variety of services like boarding, day care, grooming, pet hotels and pet sitting.

Let’s see what and how can we reduce on our dog’s expense.

At the Start: Getting a Dog Companion Fits to Your Budget

lower-dog's-cost-choose-the-right-breedVarious elements are to count on when you decide which kind of dog is best to take into your household. Starting from the right lengthy walks and exercising a bigger canine requires. And continue with our lifestyle possible proper for a smaller dog instead. Ask yourself: are you ready to handle the everyday food and health issues (and bills) that might come up?

Additionally, it’s useful to know what to count on when the annual expenses come to mind? You need to anticipate paying no less than between $1,315 and $1,845 for your dog. Obviously, the amount will vary by the size of your animal. A bigger canine usually could cost more. He is eating more, needs greater dog house, larger outdoor place and alike.

The same applies when choosing between purebred dog or mixed. You have to be aware that purchasing a purebred dog can cost you even thousands of dollars. Of course, among the purebred dogs, you can find frequently occurring and rarely seen species equally.

Naturally, you have to pay more for a dog which is a rare breed. I tell you just one example: a Cava-Poo-Chon puppy price can reach the $3500 tag. And you have to sign up for a waiting list and put down a $300 deposit; moreover, when your dog arrives depends on others.

However, perhaps, doing an excellent deed can be a matter of principle for you. Then why don’t you contemplate about adopting a dog over your local animal rescue organization? You’ll pay only the small adopting expenses (around $30 – $50) for a devoted and loving companion.

Just make sure to perform your record searches: Your chosen doggie has got all the necessary shots? What’s the typical life span of s/he? What are the medical tests s/he went through? Ask to see the related veterinary data. Based on those you will learn about any pre-existing circumstances that might increase in bills in the future.

Saving on Foods and Toys With Coupons

lower-dog's-cost-use-dog-food-couponsLuckily, you can find many deal websites on the Internet providing pet promotions and freebies. For instance, on MyPetSavings.com, you can find coupons on anything from dog food to household items that get rid of pet smells. And you also can subscribe via emails or RSS to get announcements on free things.

Alternatively, you may visit the Savings Center of Wag.com that gives discounts. At present, you can obtain 25% off pet food on your first order (Code: 25FOOD). Alternatively, for example, you can buy Wellness Complete Health Small Breed Adult Turkey & Oatmeal with 30% savings.

Furthermore, it’s worth having a look to PetSmart.com. Today I saw their actual offer to save 30% off $150, 20% off $100, 15% off $60 on your online order. And the free shipping is a plus, over $49.

If you’re going shopping at retailers like Petco.com, watch out for coupons and request to being a partaker in their reward’s projects.

There is another saving tip that I prefer always. I use to buy dog food in bulk, and you also can do that.

For example, at PetSmart, the dog food called Nutro Natural Choice costs $14.99 per a 5 lb bag. However, if you purchase the 30 lb bag for $52.99, then you spend less than $9 per 5 lb.

Expensive toys, gourmand treats and meals, and also stylish dog garments can certainly increase your expenses. Even so, no one has demonstrated that these items are vital to the happiness of our dogs.

And, when you’re on a spending budget, think about leaving the dream extras and go for easy ways to satisfy your dog’s need. I experienced that they prefer to have fun with you compared to a tricky toy.

Going back to the dog food; I cannot emphasize enough the timely feeding and accurate administration. I’m saying this because I know a dog owner who random provide the nutrition quantity. She has a remorse because she leaves her dog alone and by coming back she put her canine much more than necessary.

This way, she is inefficient in animal feed, and her German Shepherd is frequent patient at her vet. And this leads to the higher expenses, although it could be lower. Anyway, next time I’ll continue with dog treats and in the third part I’ll discuss about how you can reduce your vet bills.

Considering Your Dog Grooming Needs

Hi Everyone!

Before we discuss about the dog grooming needs of your pet, I’ll mention our daily actions.  I’m in a good mood because we have a new family member. At the day before yesterday, I got a German Shepherd mix puppy from a local rescue organization. The introducing the newcomer to Zizi went quite smoothly; she accepted Lisa (the puppy) instantly. (That’s meant if your dog trusts you, I believe.) Lisa gradually became acquainted with other members of my family. She has mapped out her new living space, which will be the two of them thereafter. But, let’s get to your dog’s grooming needs.

Due to the rainy weather, the soil soaked up, so the paws’ cleaning and dog bathing followed our walking with Zizi today. I took away the mud from her toes and also examined them for possibly injury. The next step of dog grooming was to comb her hair and bathe the ‘lady’ full. I rubbed her coat thoroughly by towel and ended the canine grooming process with a hair dryer. I found she is also preparing for the winter and grows her hair anyway.

I’m lucky enough with her coat. Given that she is a Labrador and German Shepherd mix, she requires only simple maintenance, like hair brushing. Anyway, the dog grooming seems like an art for beginner dog owners as I experienced. And it really can be an art if you go from primary canine care to virtually spa-like coddling.

Grooming Requirements of Different Coat Types

Before going any further, you’ve to accept that dog grooming isn’t merely an indulgence. Rather it’s an unavoidable necessity. Your doggie which doesn’t get correct grooming on a timely method is susceptible for gingivitis, sickness, parasites and harm to skin and fur equally.

The fundamental grooming necessities determined by your dog’s breed as well as his / her characteristics. Based on those, your dog’s hair can be short, long, straight, wavy, silky, coarse, and combinations thereof, too. And you, as a pet owner, will handle the canine hair in beginning.

komondor-dog-grooming-needs-are-frequent

A Komondor Dog Grooming Needs Are Frequent

Lengthy haired canines that shed are required grooming more often than short coated fellows or those that solely shed periodically. Those dogs equipped with frizzy or curly hair want day by day care to remain detangled and take away particles or foliage. Namely, that will be caught within the coat as your animal is walking or exercising outside.

Hiring Dog Grooming Professionals

And do not deny, but bringing your family dog to a professional groomer on the weekly basis may be costly. Obviously, if you want to bring your favorite to dog shows, then you should take the expenses involved. And, if you’d like to give the best for your furry friend, you may also rent mobile dog groomers.

Those people are operating a complete grooming station within their vans. These professionals are parking in your driveway and perform the whole grooming process onboard. This is a superb comfort and avoids the “moist dog” odor lingering within your bathroom. To economize, it’s also possible doing most of the primary dog grooming methods yourself if you learn those.

Dog Grooming on Your Own

Of course, your four-legged mate might not be thrilled about receiving bathing, but that shouldn’t limit you. Bathing is definitely a well being concern for pets similar to how it is due to people. You will not cease to bathing your toddler simply because she shrieks at tub time, will you?

If you’re uncertain about the proper techniques doing brushing, de-tangling and bathing your pet’s coat, look for the best online resource. Alternatively, you can possibly ask for watching the elements of dog grooming at a groomer. You might also take a course from a vet’s workplace or a pet retailer.

Those classes help you to get familiar with the proper techniques. Additionally, you can obtain some professional recommendations on how to handle your family dog’s nervousness or fears throughout grooming process.

WARNING! The skin underneath of your canine’s fur could be sensitive extremely. So, keep away from aggressive scrubbing when bathing your animal. Otherwise, you w’ll be able to remove excessive body oils that defend skin and fur follicles equally.

I Use To Do It This Way

I use to avoid shampoo, scents or powder and alike, which isn’t designed for apply with canines. Applying those is doing more harm than good as well as an unnecessary vet bill. Namely, those products may cause infection or irritation in your dog’s skin.

Thus, if some product isn’t dedicated for my dog or her fur, then I never use that. Certainly, you’re understand the importance of being patient during grooming. I always take time to speak fondly to my dog and rub her belly or shoulder.

These contribute to develop a joyful feeling and quality dog grooming process. For instance, if I’m impatient, then I don’t even begin this operation. My canine would be difficult to manage if she discovered my impatience.

Dog Grooming Tools

Dog's-grooming-toolsOf course, to reach success in grooming requires correct tools. Please, don’t use the outdated hairbrush of your family in your canine. Acquire particular combs and brushes that are designed for your pet’s fur. You’ll not lower your expenses using your throw-away when you injure your dog’s skin with those.

I believe, your dog doesn’t miss the pain (you might cause), and also you a high veterinary bill. Apart from that, you would possibly save some cash by bringing your dog to a groomer monthly or bi-weekly. For example, you’re able to do plain hair brushing or deal with the bath every two weeks (if necessary).

Conclusion

When your dog friend spends the majority of its time open air, you continuously need to do primary grooming. Without cleanliness, your family dog can be subject to different parasite colonization, which may give him a hard time. The dog grooming is a necessary part of keeping up with your dog’s health as well. His or her good looks and your peace of mind deserves that.

Should You Exercise Your Dog Daily?

Hello Dog Friends!

As we all know, our dogs are pack animals; they require certain activity and a company to be happy. These needs can be solved easily if you exercise your dog daily. And, in contrast to your mates, who could omit a workout session due to appointments, unpleasant weather or additional tasks, canines by no means offer you a justification to avoid exercising.

Why exercise your dog make sense?

When your dog doesn’t receive enough activity, chances are he will get bored, annoyed and unhealthy. The workout tones the muscular tissues, helps the physique and metabolic system to operate correctly, and impounds the mind.

Everyone who keeps a dog that forced to endure the shortage of physical activity and mental input can tell you that their animal shows destructive conduct frequently. Although, this behavior will cease magically when the canine is starting to get out everyday.

Therefore, exercising is not only important because it keeps your dog happy. It’s vital for your dog’s physical well-being, as well as his mental healthnot to mention yours.Exercise

Exercising Your Pet Is Fun

Keeping your dog in good condition is also an excellent approach for you to bond and spend some quality time with your beloved pal. Additionally, when you exercise your dog that’s a great benefit for you personally to stay fit, active, and get your heart pumping. So, all in all, exercise is an activity that can benefit both, you and your dog. And that is part of the joy of being a dog owner.

All Dogs Need Exercise

Studies as well as experience showed that dogs who are getting adequate exercise are healthier and happier. They are also more social when they are in public places. When dogs are given regular exercise, they are calmer at home and are less restless when left alone.

However, just like feeding, choosing the right amount of exercise for your dog is depending on several factors. These factors are the age, size, and type of breed.

Age: Puppies require a daily exercise for proper muscle development. Their high energy levels need to be released in some form of constructive activity. Consequently, giving them their daily exercise is the best way to do it.

Not being able to release their pent-up energy can lead to destructive behavior such as chewing or digging. On the other hand, a mature, aging dog needs less exercise because of their lower energy levels.

Size: Large dogs do not necessarily need more exercise than small dogs. In fact, many huge breeds like the Mastiff or Great Dane would rather relax and sit on the porch all day. But, if the option is given, then they go out for a 2-mile run.  On the other hand, many types of small breeds such as the Jack Russell Terrier or Chihuahua still keep on going even after a three-mile walk.

Type Of Breed: Your dog’s breed is also a big factor on the amount of exercise required. For instance, dogs that were originally bred to herd such as the Australian Shepherd Dog, Border Collie, and German Shepherd need to be exercised every day.

Another example of dog types that requires a daily exercise are those that were genuinely bred to hunt (hunting dogs). Examples of these dogs are the English Beagle, Chesapeake Bay Retriever, and German Hunt Terrier.

And finally, sled dogs such as the Siberian Husky, Samoyed, and Alaskan malamute share the same high level of energy as the herding dogs and hunting dogs and therefore, need to be exercised regularly.

Walking as an Exercise

The slow, gentle movement of walking helps you and your dog in several ways. It tones your muscles, provides oxygen to your heart, and is beneficial to your lungs. If your dog isn’t used to walking, or if he is a little overweight, start him off with a short 15-minute walk. Slowly built up the pace as you see he get more accustomed to it.

Your canine may be the type which loves just to go out for a walk and feel the breath of fresh air. Then a 1-2 mile of a daily walk is all it’s necessary to keep your dog fit. And maybe even more if you take the challenge. Your dog will certainly love it, especially if you have one type with a high level of energy.

However, it may happen you don’t have time for long walks. On the other hand, maybe the idea of strolling for 2 miles is simply not your idea of fun. In that situation, your dog will be just as happy if you can only take him for a quick walk around the block twice daily. Obviously, it is better if you can add a little playing, too.

Exercising Your Elderly Dog

man-exercises-elderly-labrador

Man Exercises Elderly Labrador

When our dog has reached his senior years – about 7 years old for large breeds and 13 – 14 years old for small breeds – his level of energy may be lower. If so, I continue with their normal exercise on a daily basis, maybe just at a slower pace. I keep going until I feel that s/he is ready to retire and slow down.

To keep my dog happy and in good physical and mental condition is my duty. Once my canine pal reaches his or her elder age, I use to decrease the amount of exercise I give them. But, I never stop. I may feel that s/he is getting a little slow and requires less activity. Then a stroll through the park or going to bathing in water may be a better alternative for him or her.

A few example exercises that I use to do with our senior dog are: a short or long walk, slow runs in the park, going to the beach, going for a short hike on a trail, or a simple game of fetch. These are activities that our dog can enjoy doing well into his or her old age.

If your senior dog is suffering from a joint or bone trouble, you will need to slow him down. He will still need to move and stay active, but the amount and length of exercise should be kept to a minimum. If I were you, instead of doing a 3-mile  walk, I’d modify it to a 1-mile  walk and do it twice a day. Swimming is another alternative exercise for dogs suffering with a hip dysplasia or other bones disorder.

Supervising His Exercise

I recommend you to keep your eye on your dog during his exercise and make sure that he is not pushing himself too hard.  Dogs love to please their owners, and they will push themselves to the limit if they think that doing so will make you happy.  Watch out for any signs that he needs to slow down. Such signs are: limping, panting, slow in pace, or sleeping for a long period of time after the exercise, which is a sign of severe exhaustion.

WARNING! Keep in mind when exercise your dog that older dogs as well as some puppies can develop joint injuries or foot pad injuries from running on hard concrete. If at all possible, let your dog run or walk on dirt, sand, or grass. If you have no choice but to walk him on concrete, avoid running and slow the pace.

How to Fix Shy Dog’s Behavioral Problem?

The Problem

“Alex, what should I do with my dog? You know, I’ve a seven-month old German Shepherd female doggie, and some problem is with her’s behavior. She is trying to be a chief inside our house like an assertive leader individuality. We have two other dog at home; one of them is a thirteen years-old mixed breed, and the other is a two years’ GSD as well.

shy-dog-will-I-be-safe-hereThe point is that her conduct changes suddenly toward the opposite direction as soon as we exit through our gate. She becomes a shy animal to people or other dogs. Obviously, there are other dog walkers too, but I cannot stop to talk with them.

She starts a tantrum, and is hiding behind my back; she just steps into my butt. This ‘hiding behind me’ phenomenon occurs even when guests arriving to us. Once happened that I started a conversation with another dog walker handled two canines in the park. The two wanted to get to know her.

She jerked out the leash from my hand and almost ran home until I could catch her. I asked for second opinion, and they told she is precarious, considering she came from a rural farm two months ago. I don’t understand why because we love her and has everything she’s necessary. What should I do?”

Probable Reasons of Dog’s Shyness

The question above was a part of a conversation between a friend and me at our mutual hairdresser. There may be some things behind this behavior. Given that we are talking about a young dog which lives in good conditions, we need to refer to her early times. She presumably would feel herself comfortable if she were yet between those familiar conditions.

However, put ourselves into the position of this young canine (speaking figuratively). Her situation has changed; her living conditions are already others in an urban environment. She experiences new sounds and sights as well as situations, which are unfamiliar to her. She didn’t meet with so many people, dogs, street traffic, etc. before. Therefore, to catch a decent start is difficult for her in a unknown place.

I would say, she misses a good socialization which includes the habituation to these elements. And, don’t forget that all puppy experience a phase influenced by fear around their two months of age. This is one of their early stages of learning about the world. Experiencing some frightening thing during this timeframe may make them shy.

Experiences show, they’ll even be subjected to another concern in some interval between their six – fourteen months. Depending on the breeds and species this can take place even at their seventh months of age, as the dog in question is now.

Obviously, you may have a canine that got an excellent socialization and habituation to different situations. But, such vagueness and worry may occur related some stuff that won’t have disturbed them before. So, this can be a tense period to your young dog.

I  used to care to avoid horrifying situations by all means at this timeframe. And I’m trying to make countless good associations as much as possible. Anyway, the rationale she attempted to break free after which get away when possibility occurred might be that canines’ first response within a difficult scenario is an escape.

Fixing the Shy Behavior Problem

What would I do? In another post, I discussed how to overcome car travel stress in dogs. The main character of that story is also a puppy I rescued from the street. I also would apply the similar kind and slow accustoming to things.

shy-puppyAnd once she gets trust toward me then I’d produce challenging situations gradually, step by step. I’d not to drive her to handle more and more. She wouldn’t be able to deal with too much so quickly. And you would make a continuous issue which can be avoidable anyway.

And my next suggestion is to discuss your visitors to disregard her. I know from experience; people like to gain up doggies. They are prone to talk to pooches and attempt to caress them hoping dogs will take that gladly. But, people ignore one serious thing.

With their approach, they step into the dog’s personal space, and that might be interpreted as an offensive gesture. You need to ask them completely neglect the doggie as she isn’t existing. Tell your guests to do not even have a look at her.

Moving Gradually

This way, the canine will interpret the situation not offensive. She’ll perceive that your guest people do not pose a threat to her, and – after a time – she will be calm, then curious. You may make the process more smoothly by giving some tasty treats to your visitors previously when they are seated.

I would observe the process from the corner of my eye. When my canine becomes curious, I would praise her kindly. And I’d encourage my guests to throw her a piece or two treats gently. If she has accepted it, I’d ask them slowly to repeat the process. And the tasty treat – by chance – will be nearer and nearer to guests at every attempt.

I’d ask my visitors to be very patient during this process and still avoid eye contact with the pooch! They would repeat this until the treat falls by their armchair. At this time I’d let them to tell gentle words to her, without eye contact. If my canine accepted the treat and wouldn’t go away because of the speaking, then I’d allow the careful touch by my visitors and a short eye contact. This could take some time undoubtedly. However, to eliminate her timid conduct at her tempo is highly desirable.

Apply This Approach Outside

You possibly can apply something similar approach to accustom her to individuals on streets or neighbours and your buddies. Hold a certain distance from them of course, as well as let her go behind you if she would like too. You similarly give the people treats so if she reveals curiosity, they may perform the described scenario.

However, people shouldn’t even have a look at her! You then do in a similar way as with your guests did in your own home previously. In case you have family or friends and even buddies with mild and calm canines you then additionally do manage to accustom in the identical manner. Allow her to keep behind if she needs to at beginning.

Sustain a cushy distance to start with after which do the slow introduction scenario at her pace. And maybe bringing them for a collective on lead walks to begin with keeping a distance she’s pleased with also would be efficient.

Alex

P.S. Plenty of brief and kind experiences are what’s going to help you. But, you might have to wait a time until she really feels settled sufficient. Thus don’t give up at the first few failure cases. Many successes!

Thanks to Talk Our Dogs Readers & Subscribers!

Hi everyone!

I’m writing this post on Friday – the day before the weekend. The weather is spoiling us with brilliant sunshine. We deserved that because we saw the rain clouds only during four days. I decided this article will be other than most of the previous. The reason is twofold. Firstly, I’d like to say to thank you for my subscribers publicly for their support. Secondly, I intend to give you here some additions to my “about me” page.

Saying Thank You

To start from the beginning, it wasn’t easy for me to unbosoming myself to the world. I’m not so extroverted like a celebrity who shares even their bedroom affairs with the universe. And I do not declare myself an expert. I just love the animals and that feeling started sixty-five years ago – at least, so I recall.

And believe me, I’ve seen a thing or two during this period. I like to write about dog topics occur in dog owners’ everyday life. Due to that concept, you may find fewer chit-chats in my articles, although I’m not an opponent of building relationships.

Far from it! Nevertheless, only so much time is in a day for me besides other commitments I’ve. However, as I experienced, you, my readers and subscribers appreciate the meat in an article. I tried to write about dog-related topics I had the pleasure to get to know so far. But I try to keep up with the latest trends as well.

I also got several feedbacks on this in emails and comments, and now I’m saying a Big Thank You for your kind support!

About Choosing Topics

As for the choice of subjects, before I started this site, I was thinking about pre-programmed, themed topics. Not much time elapsed, and I found it is better for the readers – and myself, too – if I’m dealing with the problems arising daily. Due to that, I have no shortage of subjects. And that’s the reason if one or other category contains more or less articles.

For instance, you meet different dog persons during walking with your canine. You can do discussions when you’re purchasing dog food, toys, equipments, etc. for your favorite in stores and markets. I often got topic ideas when meet other canine owners in a club.

Moreover, I’ve to mention the dog races and shows I visited occasionally. Furthermore, my habit is to discuss with vets and staff of a shelter I worked as a volunteer before. One of my engagements is reading pet-related news on the net.

Of course, my dog owner or prospective canine keeper readers also suggest topics which they are interested in. I ask you, my readers and subscribers, keep this good habit in the future, too. Please, do not hesitate to ask, I’ll try to do my best to answer your questions.

About My Love for Dogs

As you may know from the above, my parents familiarized me with animals as a little kid. There were different domestic animals in our household, among dogs as well. Furthermore, my grand dad dealt with flocks at that times, so I met shepherd dogs, too.

In the household, I spent my childhood, there was a Hungarian Kuvasz called Swan. She was a very good sidekick, and allowed me a lot. I loved to be with her, and my parents educated me being responsible to Swan. I took part in her feeding, watering, cleaning and exercising.

Due to the bonding developed between the two of us, I was mentally down when she passed away. I became bedridden. Medicaments were ineffective. One of the sheepdogs of my granddad was the right medication for me. I often think back to that fur balls with love; he was Curier, a Puli. 🙂

How It Continued?

In my further life, I met many kind of dog breeds. Some of them lived in my kennel, others I met in the shelter mentioned above. I’d be in a big trouble if I should have to count their numbers. Apart from that, there are quite a few breed stood close to me.

Just name a few besides above mentioned:

Lobo – Bernese Mountain Dog

Doris – Boxer

Bear – Komondor

Courier – Puli

Roll – German Shepherd (rescued)

Manu – Siberian Huski (rescued)

Ficus – Mudi mix (rescued)

Nero – Mixed breed (rescued)

Tik-tak – Wirehaired Foxterrier (rescued)

Zizi – Labrador / German Shepherd mix (rescued)

Anyway, they are those canines I wrote about in my book, too. Of course, dealing with different dogs wasn’t cloud-free always. The solution of problems from time to time helped my progress in dog keeping as well. So, what I know about dogs nowadays, I collected from living with them.

And now there are few pictures from the city I live: (pictures open in new window)
