Is Context Between Dog’s Health and Water?

When it comes to the water’s role in health, we know that no live organism can exist, operate without water. That’s how it is, an instance of that is that the water is the main component of the human body. An adult human’s body contains around 60-70% water. For example, if one weights 176 pounds, his body contains about 14,3 gal water. Well, you may find similar rates in our dogs, too. So, there is a straight context between dog’s health and the water.

Water Needs

dog-drinks-waterAs researchers have shown, your family dog’s physique comprises around of 70% water. By losing all the fats and 50% of protein of its body has less impact than he cannot get water for two days or more. It can be fatal for him if the water in your canine’s body is reduced to one tenth.

With a view to survive, an adult canine requires – at a minimum – two milliliters of water projected to each pound weight daily. That’s when considering 1 ounce contains 30 milliliters of water. However, that two milliliters are only enough for your animal to produce urine within his body.

Importance of Water

Without sufficient water vital for urine providing, your family dog or whatever canine won’t be able to live. When you are providing an infinite amount of water, your canine will consume a lot more than that two millimeters required. That is particularly true if you always provide fresh water to him.

Handing your doggie merely the smallest amount of water each day could also be sufficient for him to outlive, although not for long. Shortage in water injures the system and terminates its functions progressively. He’ll ultimately become weak, come down with a disease, and decease.

Water Utilizing Ways In Dog’s Body

The advantage of providing your family dog enough water compared to the smallest amount wanted is that its system can use that multi-mode (just like in humans).

1) The water facilitates the digesting and the process of taking nutrients from the food.

2) Our dog’s system is using the water to eliminate fuel, and that is transformed into energy.

3) You can more easily sustain the standard temperature of your dog’s physique by ingesting enough water as well.

4) Consuming sufficient water replaces the fluids which might be lost in our dog’s body by excretion.

5) The water also requires to mix various kinds of chemical substances within dog’s systems. Namely, the distinct chemical reactions ensure the dissolving and remodeling those components.

6) The water also is a transport device at the same time. It takes the nutrients to the cellular structures and in addition carries poisonous waste material from the cells to the organs for correct processing. With the lack of water, these organs won’t be able to eliminate toxic things off of the dog’s body.

7) In addition, the water is required to control the acid balance within the blood flow.

8) You may know the evergreen saying goes something like “Beauty comes from inside.” This applies to our dog’s mental health as well. Namely, if he or she is happy, and balanced, the vitality is radiating from every pore. That’s can be seen through its eyes, skin, nail, and hair condition too. And the sufficient water consumption has a big role in that as well.

My Take on It

Perhaps you can perceive from the above that the water is nearly always necessary for each function occurs within your favorite’s body. And as a result of its versatility plus the degree to which it’s utilized, water is regarded to be a crucial nutrient that’s needed for all kinds of dogs.

If your animal doesn’t get to water s/he can be died within a few days because of its dehydration. However, he can withstand the starvation; he will only be caught up by the fate when he runs out half its original weight. It’s obvious, there is a significant difference between the consequences of the lack of the two.

So giving my dog anything to eat; homemade food, meat, dry food or canned meals, I make sure fresh water is in front of her always. Especially in the summer when I’m out for several hours, I put enough fresh water in a couple of shaded places to let her drink. I never let the water bowl being empty, and I recommend you to do so as well.

P.S.: By reading this article, I hope you gained some insight related the role of water in your dog’s health. The comment section is open for your remark or question, take advantage of it. Thank You!

Dog Food Can Result In Dog Aggression?

One of my acquaintances read on a net forum that the pet food available in stores can cause dog aggression. There were different opinions of forum members about it and also were recommendations contained to switch on to raw food or vegetarian meal. She is a bit confused in the matter as the fly in the spider’s web – figuratively speaking. I told her that I knew and recommended her to call and ask her vet as well as visit authoritative science websites.

Meantime, I also performed what I suggested her to make myself certain 111% in my knowledge. My vet gave me negative answer to the question related direct correlation between the two things. I went further and visited a few science webpages in this topic. The explanations are very similar to what I read on here: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8575968

Yes and No

There isn’t any straightforward connection between dog food and dog aggression. It’s most likely impossible to point towards just one specific dog food. So, claiming categorically that you shouldn’t nourish it as it’s going to make your family dog extra aggressive becomes false in this form.

dog aggressionApart from that, to feed your dog a typically needy food plan could be an assenting element of dog aggression. You will find research, which has instructed that nourishing your furry pal weak quality meals can lead to aggression.

Some preservatives and sugar in canine food could also can be connected to hyperactive conduct, which might enhance the chance of aggression. Synthetic coloring using some foods happen to links with conduct issues, hyperactivity, studying barriers, timidity and such.

Inadequate cholesterol within the diet plan can be a contributing element for several dogs considering it’s necessary for correct brain functionality. Weak meals also can trigger allergic reactions, which might improve the probability of aggression. But, only in that situation if your doggie has contained whatever physical phobia.

At this stage, a few of these connect between nutrition and aggression have solely been assumed. You will probably notice little scientific information to confirm the statements. However, low quality meals have the opportunity to make usually worse temperament issues and health.

Other Side of the Coin

None of these assumptions – concerning direct links between aggression and dog food – adjusts the truth that all canines must be brought up with firm and mild loveliness. The puppies must be properly-socialized in their early age and launched to plenty of different pleasant individuals and dogs.

However, canines also need to be fed a superb food contains all the necessary nutrients. The dogs usually must have an eating plan that starts with numerous named sources of meat. You need to keep away from meals, which contain corn gluten meal. You need to keep off from meat by-products and digest.

By all means I avoid synthetic preservatives like BHA, BHT as well as Ethoxyquin. I want to look for meals don’t include synthetic colors, sweeteners and sugars. I’m searching for nutriment comprises the least grains. I try to buy foods that satisfy AAFCO requirements.

I’m firmly believe, in case you comply with these recommendations then you will discover good foods for your pet on the market. Common sense says the following: if there happen to be whatever reality to the concept dog meals can redound behavior issues and then to dog aggression,  these food types will certainly be more unlikely acquire a positive effect.

One concept that ought to be unmasked is the idea providing your animal meat results in aggression, or nourish him or her vegetarian food regimen is going to make him / her extra peace-loving. A family dog is in all certainty a carnivore within the overall sense.

He is definitely an omnivore in routine – something belonging to scavenger and in a position to consume a lot of various types of food. Apart from that, physically, he or she  wants meat protein to outlive and feel wholesome. By feeding your family dog meat or diets, which might be based upon meat protein don’t trigger aggression from him/her.

Those simply satisfy his or her dietary requirements. Alternatively, to nourish your four-legged friend a vegetarian food plan will lead to weak nutrition. Your canine is just not a vegetarian in any aspect or form. Anyway, I mean here the main meal for them and not the motivational treats. I also use to give my dog carrot and apple bites.

One of the main reasons that you simply so frequently hear corn together with other grains blasted for his or her pet food is since they’re mostly vegetable-based and, due to this fact, tougher to digest for your canine.

This is especially true for vegetarian-primarily based dog meals. They’re more durable to process in your dog system. And so they are free from the meat protein that your home guarding dog health requires. Moreover, they don’t keep your canine more peace-loving or do whatever thing to forestall conduct issues. In reality, by redounding weak diet plan, pure vegetarian nutrition is inclined to make behavior habits worse due to the missing elements meat contains.

P.S.: You know; my principle was always to feed my animals for the longer living with us together. I was succeeded in that during the past sixty-five years. So, I hope you picked up some food for thought from today’s entry. What do you think? Share it in the comments. Thank You!

How to Live With Handicapped Dogs?

Dogs are very much like us humans. The remembrance of canines is so much more human-like. Their memory is permitting our best friend to imitate our actions, even with some delays. Majority of them see the world in any specific second relatively as people do. But there are other similarities as well. For instance, dogs can have the same kind of handicaps that people possess.

They may lose a limb, be born deaf or blind, or experience handicaps due to declining health in later years. There are also some health problems that would qualify a dog as handicapped such as megaesophagus problems or other congenital issues.

(When your dog has megaesophagus, the gullet expanded so it doesn’t push food items down to the stomach. Due to this fact, what your dog eats fails to take into the gastric. And sometimes the food stays within the esophagus, and is ultimately regurgitated. Alternatively, it declines within the esophagus or enters the lungs via breathing.)

The megaesophagus illness can occur in dogs, cats and humans anyway. All in all, for you, the owner, living with your dog that has a drawback can be a challenge.

Preparing Yourself and Your Home

If you are living with a handicapped dog, then you probably already know that you may spend more than your share of time at your vet’s office. It is important to get a good diagnosis and to have a vet who you trust. Your dog’s care and quality of life will depend on establishing a suitable working relationship with your vet.

Consequently, find a veterinarian who understands your dog’s condition and who will talk to you about your dog. Don’t be afraid to ask for referral to a specialist if necessary. There are continual veterinary advances so it’s a good idea for you to try to do your own research. This way, you are aware of any new treatments that could help your dog.

When it comes to living with a handicapped dog, it’s possible that you will need to make some special adjustments in your home for your canine. For example, if your dog has trouble walking you may need to assist him with a harness when he goes up and down stairs.

There is a chance that you live with a blind dog. Then it’s a good idea to keep large pieces of furniture in the same positions. This way, your dog will become accustomed to where they are and plot his course around them. If you move, then he will bump into things.

Treating Handicapped dogs

Some dogs are able to handle some handicaps much more easily than others. Deaf dogs often can be trained to learn hand signals. Using hand signals you can train your dog in all the typical obedience commands and many other orders.

As long as your dog can see you, he will be able to follow your commands. If your dog is unilaterally deaf – hard of hearing in one ear – you probably won’t even know that he has any deafness at all.

paralized-handicapped-dogDogs which have lost a limb are usually well able to compensate and are very mobile on three legs. I have seen examples of this, and more than one. There are dogs, which have severe problems with two limb. I mean those canines which are paralyzed in their hind legs.

They can be fitted with a cart or wheelchair and remain very active. The wheelchairs can be collapsed and taken by the dog when he travels. Some dogs are still able to go hiking with their owners using their wheelchairs.

As the Years Passes

It may happen that you have an elderly dog which is beginning to develop some handicaps. Then you will need to take each one separately and try to work through the problem. If your dog’s eyesight is beginning to fail, for instance, help your dog down steps at night. Walk him outside to potty, especially if he has problems seeing through shadows at night.

If his hearing is starting to fail, expect to call him a few times before he comes or goes to find him and bring him in for dinner. If he is developing some arthritis, talk to your vet to see if he may need some pain medication to help him.

Living with the handicapped dogs isn’t always easy but canines are much more resilient than we sometimes believe. They can often overcome great difficulties. If your dog has a handicap, then try to find some creative ways to help him make his life easier. Your dog will be willing to work with you and try new things as long as you make the effort.

P.S.: Are you living with a handicapped dog? What is the nature of this handicap? How do you managing your common daily life? If you share your story in the comment, others may get ideas or encouragement from it. Thank You!

Meanings of the Wagging Tail

What do you perceive when you arrive home from your work? Your pet dog is fidgeting from her top to toes in all certainty. Her eyes are shining, and she pricks up her ears. Moreover, she expresses her joy with brief, high tone barks. It may happen that for some strange reason, you don’t realize these otherwise quite loud signals. Yet, you can find out your puppy’s momentary mood when you listen the wagging tail. The meanings of wagging tail is our today’s topic.

Yes, your dog can speak! Every dog has at least a dozen types of tail wagging in its body language toolbar. And each of them is intended to communicate with. There’s nothing else to do than you observe these movements and try to understand them correctly!

It is important to investigate and understand the wagging tail. The mode of expression for each species, and even individually can change. Take your time to observe how your dog reacts in certain situations. Consequently, learn the alphabet – a lot could depend on it, if you may have some trouble sometimes.

What Does the Tail Wagging Express?

wagging-tail-by-defensive-dogThe tail wagging can mean many things. Basically, people interpret those as the friendliness and willingness to get to know. However, if you are content with this, that greatly simplifies the matter. So, let’s learn about the different meanings.

In fact, your dog can wag his tail in many alternative ways, when he is communicating with you or other animals. The better you’re at studying your canine’s body-language, together with what he’s telling with its tail, the better you are able to know what canines say to you.

Scientists have found that it really makes a huge difference, whether your dog wags his tail to the left side and also to the right. They think that canines wag their tails to the right side if they are relaxed and pleased. While they are frightened, anxious and appear like running away, dogs wag their tails to the left direction according to researchers.

What the Researchers Found

As stated by the scientists, these would be the instances of the mode the various halves of the dog’s brain manage your dog’s feelings – or whatever mammal’s feelings. The scientists engaged in research examined thirty household canines to acquire these results. The animals contained 15 male dogs and same amount of females between the age of 1 and six years old.

They positioned every dog in a big black plastic-coated wooden box, so she, or he couldn’t see through. The scientists filmed every canine’s response to 4 completely different inducements:

– towards the canine’s owner,
– to a totally unknown person,
– toward some unfamiliar, dominant dog,
– and to a cat as well.

The dogs wagged to the right side if their owner arrived at the box. Canines wagged to the right-hand direction once they met the unfamiliar individual and the cat. The unknown people obtained much less wagging compared to the dogs’ homeowners. But, the wagging direction was nonetheless, just the right. A cat acquired even fewer wagging, but the wagging was directed towards the right.

But, as soon as the dogs faced the dominant, unfamiliar canine (a male Belgian Malinois aged 4-years old), the wagging tails turned into persistent towards left. Whenever the canines had been left on their own, their tails wagged as well as the left direction. Which can mean that they well-liked to obtain company.

Testing At Home

Rather than a laboratory test, in the real life it certainly is challenging to detect this left-right preconception. However, you could try it at your home and check out your dog wagging his tail towards the right-hand once you’re together. Alternatively, discover a cat and find out the direction your dog’s tail wagged. See just how he is wagging its tail when he faced never known before people.

If you meet strange canines, it is advisable to understand that an animal which wags his tail rigidly shows no friendship for you. A rigid tail wag is the same as getting through the feelings to becoming pleasant without actually meaning that. You ought to keep your guard in alert against this type dog.

Of course, bear in mind too, that different canines have totally distinct tails. It’s quite simple to observe the tail belonging to an Irish Setter. But, when seeing a Corgi you may find yourself in trouble to read its tail. Namely, that is typically born without it or docked to short form immediately a birth. All the time you need to strive to understand the remainder of dog’s body-language to verify their attitudes.

My Observations

* Excited tail wagging. It’s like when your child jumping with abandon. The dog’s tail flutter forth and back without stopping, the whole body is a great effervescence. He shows off the happiness and fun this way.

* Careful wagging. If your dog is unsure, his tail will move back and forth parallel to the ground. But, it is important to mention that the pace is slow. Furthermore, in general, the dog lowers his head a bit.

* Subordinated wagging. In contrast to alpha males, a cringing dog lowers his tail and doesn’t really move it. He can even hide it between its legs to indicate the surrender.

* Defensive wagging. Beware of the dog listening intently, whose tail is up. This is the typical posture of the ready to attack guard dog.

* Dominant tail wagging. The alpha male indicates with tail movement that the managing role is his. He’s raising its tail up and wagging back and forth in quick strokes.

P.S.: Are you familiar with the meanings of tail wagging? Do you remember a time when that knowledge was useful for you? We want to know your thoughts on this topic, and would be glad to read it in the comments. Thank You!

What are dogs chasing tail meaning?

One of my dog walking acquaintances asked me recently: “Why do dogs chase their tails?” She has a five and half months old German Shepherd pure breed puppy. Her pooch is clever and performs several commands. They’re dealing with two hours a day. Her dog is chasing tail rarely, about once every two days. She asked me if it is a disease or a behavioral issue. Let’s see that more closely.

As far as I know, every puppy prone to chase their tails at some stage. The tail chasing for puppies is as frequent like your toddler spinning around. Puppies appear to get conscious that they possess tails and, subsequently, that is something they’re attempting to catch.

Dogs Chasing Tail Due to Boredom

dog chasing tailImagine who hasn’t experienced a fun by his pet spinning around wanting to catch his tail? It could be a joyful behavior, and canines appear to enjoy it really. However, also it might be an indication that your animal is bored and is seeking a way to amuse himself.

Of course, it may be quite possible that this behavior troubles you. This issue can be solved by supplying your pup or adult dog with numerous enjoyable toys and secure things to chew on. This way, he will have a possibility to choose other entertaining options instead tail chasing.

Chasing Tail for Awareness-Raising

It’s conceivable that some canines go on to chase their tails once they became adults since it entertains their owners. They got to know that chasing their tail will get them heed and results in their homeowners to titter and let them have affection. Thus, to obtain the benefit of this constructive attention dogs chase their tails.

In the event, you don’t want your puppy to chase his tail it’s not essential to punish your doggie and also to be rough with him. The solution is merely to cease giving him the constructive reinforcement. Stop to laugh at his harlequinade.

Hearten him to perform something else you want to do. Have fun with him with some more toys. As an illustration, throw a ball for your favorite, play frisbee, tug of war, or hide and seek with him.

Chasing Tail Because of Physical Reason

There are canines that might chase their tail, in case there is some form of bodily problem regarding their tail. In a case like this, it seems to be similar to your puppy who’s chasing his tail for amusement. But, for instance, your puppy could have a flea chew at the bottom of his tail, and it certainly is driving him mad.

He might spin to make an attempt to reach the itching place. However, he cannot attain that. So, it seems like he chases his tail. You’ll be able to solve this situation by examining what’s disturbing him. This type of rotating and chasing really doesn’t similar to tail chasing.

With its tail-chasing, your puppy or adult dog is attempting to capture the tip of his tail (in general). If there is a physical drawback, your pet is commonly trying to catch the base of its tail or its body. You could assist him by striving to note the distinction and figure out the bothering issue.

The influenced anal sacs or challenges with worms can even trigger dogs chase their tails. The tail-chasing also can happen after some physical injury, surgical procedure or ailment. German Shepherds and Bull Terriers appear to be extra susceptible to tail-chasing compared to other dog breeds.

Tail Chasing Cogency

Quite often, the tail-chasing could become a cogency, for example, an excessive constraint behavior. I read about it that Turkish veterinarians performed a research related to tail chasing. There may be some proof that this tail-chasing conduct could also be connected with high cholesterol within the nutrition.

Canines with nervousness issues can also pursue coercive tail-chasing. Considering the dog population, around 2 % of them have chance to get compulsive untidiness.

If your puppy or adult dog does grow this coercive tail-chasing habit, you ought to consult with your vet. He might suggest drug remedy regarding the issue. The most frequently used therapy for dogs is applying Prozac.

You also have to work together with your canine on behavior amendment. If you happen to suppose this is excessive, doggies who chase their tails compulsively might achieve this for many hours per day. So it certainly is critical to assist them.

My Experiences

It’s not everything being identical why dogs chase their tail. The tail chasing is a behavior disorder in many cases (but not always!). Reason why it’s not good if it becomes a habit is because if he has a problem to the environment, rather than “to speak” us, he consoles himself with that can become an obsession.

Obsessive behavior means that the dog compulsive performs a series of movement, which becomes its habit sometime. With the given movement, they burn their energy, which is a kind of relief for them. For example, the tail chasing is suchlike behavior for dogs.

In this case, the dogs are obsessed to chasing their tails around – while ignoring the world around them. Sometimes they caught it, causing bloody damage. But, – for them – the chasing itself is the most important part of the activity.

We need to create an environment that our dog finds exciting. By exercising and playing more with him, buying toys for him, we provide a better daily life. All with those we can eliminate the causes of obsessive behavior.

P.S.: Have you ever perceived as your canine chasing his tail? What was the reason? Did you ask for advice from your vet? Speak your mind in the comments. Thank You!

What Your Dogs Dream About?

Anyone – who has seen a dog sleep in a long time – can recognize that dogs are also dreaming. Their twitching or whimpers so can be inherent in dreams, as in humans. You may also agree that – between the foot jerks reminder running – your dogs possibly chasing a rabbit in their dreams. Alternatively, they are doing something similar dog thing. Because these topics are close to each other, this entry about dog dreaming follows my earlier posts on dog sleeping place and dog houses.

Structure of Your Dogs’ Brain

On the structural degree, the canine brains are kind of like those of humans. Additionally, the dogs’ brain wave samples are identical that of individuals, throughout the sleep. And they undergo the similar phases of electrical actions found in people. All of these is in line with the concept that canines are dreaming.

Rather, it would be much surprising if it turned out the dogs aren’t do that. Namely, the researchers of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have shown in rats that they’re dreaming. Although, the dogs are much more advanced in intelligence aspect than the rats are.

A large part of the dreaming that we humans simply do during the night is related to the actions that we just engaged in the day. The identical appeared to be the thing in rats. Therefore, any time a rat ran a complex labyrinth daytime he could be anticipated to dream about it at night.

Tests Results in Rats and Dogs

The researchers took electric samples from rats’ brain, while those learned the labyrinth during the day. And later, when the rats were in a stage of sleep in which people tend to dream, the researchers found similar brain-wave patterns identical to daytime.

These patterns were so clearly visible that the researchers also could  tell in addition where the rat would be in the labyrinth if it were awake. The brain of your dogs is built the way like a human. The two researchers – Kenway Louie and Matthew Wilson – have observed the same brain waves and brain activity with the sleeping dogs than in humans.

what-your-dogs-dream-aboutTherefore, we can assume bravely that – during sleep – the dog’s brain is processing the day’s events in the same manner than humans. That is with the help of dreams. The researchers also demonstrated that, of course.

They deactivated that part of the brainstem in the dogs, which regulates to not to perform the series of events seen in our sleep. The dogs then began to move, when they arrived into to dream stage of the sleep. There was a dog, which immediately began to look for its toys, and another wanted to catch a bird.

Without the results of the researchers certainly you know a story that proves that your dogs have dreams. Your dog can do dreaming about something occupied him during the day. Then the rabbit or medullary bone rather he may dream about the nasty barking of the neighbor’s dog if the anxiety arising from that left a mark on his soul.

How to Perceive Your Dogs Dreaming

When your dog’s sleep turns into deeper, his respiratory will become somewhat more regular. As time passes of roughly twenty to 30 minutes for a median-sized canine, his first dream ought to begin. You’ll perceive the transition, namely; his breathing turns into irregular and shallow.

You may notice strange muscle twitches, and you may also discover as – behind its closed lids – the canine’s eyes shifting if you gaze intently enough. The dog eyes are moving since the animal is definitely taking a look at the dream pictures almost like they were actual images of the world.

These eye actions are most attribute of a sleep contains a dream.

My Experience

II often noticed this on my dogs as well. I’m convinced that our dogs can have an evil dream, especially those canines that got a soul injury. I have often seen my Husky dog sleeping with whimpering, almost crying, at beginning when he got to me.

I brought him out of the shelter as the fifth owner. If he had trouble waking up, he had the same languid eyes and was confused as anyone who is awakened from a nightmare.

You can read on almost every forum, not to wake up your sleeping dog. That’s because it can mess up their sense of reality. There really is no need to wake them up when you see that moving their feet or give a yelp.

But, sometimes I used to wake up mine when I see she has a very bad dream. I also relieved when someone wakes me up when I’m dreaming evil.

P.S.: Are you observing your dog when he is sleeping? If yes, what are your experiences? What are your thoughts related to dogs dreaming? As we’re curious, we would like to read your stories in the comments. Thank You!

Our Dogs Have Their Own TV Channel

Finally, our dogs are in a more playful situation now. They can enjoy a TV channel dedicated for them solely. And it’s okay.

People have the possibility to choose programs from among thousands of TV channels so far. However, our dogs were forced to watch human programs only when settled in front of the TV. After all, the remote control of 50-inch plasma was in human hands, generally. Wink

I assume that the employees of DirecTV are inventive and soft-hearted people. They have recognized this injustice and resolved the anomalous situation. As a result, they created the DogTV channel which is available on the satellite TV network since August 1.

As the DogTV website says:

“DOGTV is the ideal babysitter for “home alone” dogs. Research shows that dogs feel better in the company of television, especially when the right content is on.

DOGTV provides television for dogs with  three types of programming offering relaxing and stimulating content as well as positive behavioral reinforcements. Dogs that are left alone tend to become anxious so the calming sounds and music in the relaxing segments on DOGTV were created to keep them peaceful. Many dogs also suffer from a lack of stimulation, which becomes acute when their parents are away. The stimulating segments provide dogs with invigorating images, animation and exciting real world sounds to keep them up and running.

DOGTV’s television programming meets a dog’s typical daily routine and helps prevent mental fatigue, depression and boredom.”

I think this is a laudable objective. Myself – as someone who lives with dogs more than six decades – know, how many behavior problems arise due to leaving a dog home alone for long times. Most of the dog owners forced to be away day by day, and a pet sitter isn’t available for everyone.

And even if there is, it may be possible that doesn’t fill the entire time of the dog is left alone. So, the separation anxiety may be increased, which is the best way to develop a destructive dog.

Of course, the possibility of watching TV programs for our dogs has been given so far. A small nuance was that shows broadcasted by TV channels spook about humans, and people produced those for humans. And those aren’t interested in all dogs.

Now the situation has changed. With starting this channel the DogTV staff put a point to the end of their four-years’ research. As a result of their thorough research they provide content that constructed on scientific base solely for dogs.

What I find patricularly good is that they broadcast equally included habituating, relaxing and stimulating programs, which may provide diversity for canines to avoid boredom.

Anyway, $4.99 is the monthly subscription fee for the DogTV channel. Which is next to nothing compared to the damage of chewing a bored animal can produce. And it’s available online too: dogtv dot com slash online. Here is an example program:

P.S.: What do you think about this? Have you seen the DogTV so far? How do your dogs relate to their TV channel? Please, speak your mind in the comments below. Thank You!

How To Care For Elderly Dogs?

Growing older is something that happens to all of us, and that includes our dogs too. It may seem like it was just yesterday that you brought home a bouncing ball of fur who was trying to chew your shoes but that puppy is a senior dog today. It’s important to provide some extra love and care for your elderly dogs to make them comfortable and happy.

Aging Is a Natural Process

More dog lifetimes can fit to one human generation time and our pets – unfortunately – much faster become older than us. By the years’ passage – as these are moving forward – the aging is more visible on our animal as someone may think.

In order to ensure the quality of life of your aging favorite on high levels in the period of “golden age,” you should be aware of some important things about the aging process. Elderly dogs can start to show signs of age as early as six or seven years old.

As your furry pal gets older, a few of its senses probably will begin to be somewhat blunt. Its hearing ability might not be as sharp as it was earlier. Besides, his or her eyesight may become unclear to some extent. Moreover, even its senses of smell and taste will become weaker than used to be.

Your Elderly Dogs Need Extra Care

Elderly-dogs These differences from the previous status indicate that your canine might have slightly extra care. A lot of elderly dogs start experiencing difficulty arranging steps and stairs. This may be resulting from arthritis.

However, it’s also likely that it’s because your lovable old friend doesn’t see in that extent once he did. If your favorite is experiencing issues with stairs of your home, then try pursuing with him. He’ll be glad to see you’re next to him.

When you visit the vet, you should ask about having a senior health check-up for your dog past the age of seven. Your vet can do a blood panel and run some other tests. By doing those he can check your dog’s kidney function and make sure he’s in good health for his age.

Be sure that your vet also checks out any lumps or bumps on your older dog. When dogs grow old, they might be susceptible to tumors. These lumps could also be benevolent. However, your veterinarian might want to perform a tiny biopsy merely to be sure. To catch potential problems in time is your best policy.

Your old dog friend could possibly do fine if you’re there to help him. He might as well have issues seeing during the darkness which might make him unwilling to go outside doing his toilet activity at night. You do the best when you walk outside with your doggie within the evenings and discover if this improves things.

Aging Comparison

Just a little far-fetched is, but we use to compare their age to the number of human years. If yes, the first two years of dogs generally should be multiplied by 14 and the rest by 7. It’s just so lame, because there is a difference to the definition of the lifetime related with the size of small, medium and large dogs.

For example, a 10-year-old small dog fit to 70, a mid stature to 80, and a large corresponds to 90 – 100 human years (based on my research and experience). The latter group (like Caucasian, Komondor, Newfoundland, etc.) aren’t used much longer to live than 10-12 years, while toy poodles can be active even in their 14-17 years of age. Bear, my own Komondor was 12 years and two months old when he left us.

Change In Appetite

To upgrade to the diets suitable to the nutritional needs of elderly dogs is expedient in case of the larger-sized dogs at 5, and smaller-sized dogs at seven years of age. The dog aging is not a disease, but a predisposing factor for diseases. That’s the reason why these animals require special feeding.

If your animal isn’t able to smell and taste things like he did anno, he might not be as excited about his food any more. Then don’t delay mixing his food a little to create it more appealing to him. In case you feed kibble subsequently you might need to add canned food to become more suitable for your pet.

Dental Problems?

You may add some home prepared food to his nutrient in order to have him more keen on eating. If your pooch refuses to take meals don’t assume his appetite gone. For example, a lot of older dogs may have dental illnesses. And that prevent them from eating regardless of how high their hungry is.

I’ve to say that checking their breath is worthwhile. When it’s very wrong, then he may suffer by severe tooth relapse or even a tooth that should be removed. Have a look at his teeth frequently. Check if is there any green-looking or brown teeth?

Then bring him or her to perform dental examine to make sure if tooth issues are keeping away him from eating. Your family dog would benefit from having a nasty tooth pulled or another trouble fixed. Why let him suffer, right?

It is very important to realize that the bowel movement is sluggish in old ages. Thus, it’s reasonable to avoid providing bones from 8 -10 years of age (depending upon the size of your dog). Otherwise, you increase the possibility of constipation, which can result in painful defecation. The reason of the death of an old boxer dog was this, in the circle of dog keepers I know.

The Possibility of Arthritis

A number of elderly dogs are fighting with the inflammation of their joints (like humans). If this option is occurred at your pet, you must discuss with your veterinarian to find out if a treating or medication required. It’s also possible to search for supplements, which have helped numerous dogs.

These can be MSM and glucosamine-chondroitin. You can furthermore discover remedies that comprise shark cartilage along with other elements considered to help arthritis, which could benefit your Fido.

Elderly dogs can take pleasure in sleeping on a cozy bed. In this respect, the orthopedic dog beds could ensure the better feeling to your doggie. You may search for beds, which have a mattress that decentralizes the animal’s weight evenly on it.

That helps it be much less complicated to your dog to rise up without ache. Furthermore, there are heated bed variations that can even help your dog to feel himself comfortable.

There are many things you can do to help your elderly dog feel better and experience a more cozy life. If he seems to be having difficulties, you should always check with your vet. Otherwise, try to make him convenient and happy. After all, he has given you pleasure so far, thus he deserves the care.

P.S.: Have you been lucky enough to have a dog for a long time lived with you? What are your experiences, related to dog aging? We are curious to hear your thoughts about this topic in the comments. Thank you!

Dog Barking and Its Causes

Why do dogs bark? That’s because they cannot mew. Smile Putting the joke aside, the dog barking is one-of-a-kind interaction and signaling device with people and other dogs. In other words, that’s part of the dog body language. The varied, diverse, and often vocalizing barking is one of the most distinctive features of dogs live today.

Us, humans, often fret about it, but that’s because we don’t understand the nature of dogs. Our dogs are similar to our children, in certain extent. If they are comfortless, hungry or thirsty as well as detect a threat or worried, they might bark. They indicate something with that, quasi send a message to us or the other dogs.

For example, we have a scorcher heat in these August days. Accordingly, we try to keep ourselves as fresh as possible, on different ways. We go to shaded place or a beach, enjoy the benefits of air conditioning, and consume refreshing drinks. But, can our dog do so, or he lacks these options?

Is there a shaded area for our Fido? Has he enough fresh drinking water or the Sun made its bowl dry? You should supply enough meals, drinking water and shaded place to your pet to feel himself well and voilá … the barking problem disappears.

Why the Dog Barking Formed Anno?

According to research, the ancestors of dogs were barking much less. I read the Applied Animal Behaviour Science, where Csaba Molnar science journalist, formerly an ethologist at Hungary’s Eotvos Lorand University, reported on the research conducted by his team.

Dog-barking-as-a-Rough-Collie-showsAs I understand it, the barking as a form of speech developed as a feature of the domesticated dogs. Their predecessors understood each other’s specific body language and voice signals well. Consequently, a need for barking rarely occured in their life.

The signals of dogs are partly vocal, and to some extent, based on gestures. Unfortunately, the man wasn’t really able to read the body language of dogs. Thus, canines had no other choice than to have learned to speak, that is bark.

So perhaps we can understand them. Interestingly, if a domesticated dog runs wild (becomes homeless, will be stray on streets), then after a while he forgets to bark again. It is likely that the barking spread to such an extent as it would be the impact of living together with people.

The ethologists were studied and analyzed digitally a lot of variable barking shape. And now they not only attach importance to the communication between the varieties. But, they also pay attention to the information connection of creatures working with people as well.

They recorded the intonations in many situations and analyzed the acoustic characteristics. They wanted to identify on what basis the people determine the mood of barking. The results show that people can determine on a fairly uniform manner the probable atmosphere of dogs based solely on their sounds (e.g. yelping frequency).

The bark is therefore, a very effective communication tool. That allows dogs (and people too) to be capable gathering a fine picture about the different and unique atmosphere and the external environment of the barking species. Furthermore, it may help to understand better our four-legged friends. Consequently, we can read their sign language.

Bark Types

The rowdy dogs – as my research and experience show – can be divided into six main groups according to the causes of barking:

* The “excited” dog is passionate and can be stimulated easily. It moves a lot, and sometimes gasps throughout barking. Its continuous barking is directed towards that thing which irritates him. That might be, for example, an unusual noise, a frog, a bird or a hedgehog in the garden, etc.

Dog-barking,-as-a-Poodle-calls-you-to-play-with-a-yelp* The “look at me” type dog feels himself lonely and wants attention. He looks at the chosen people or animal and starts crisp, strong, definite barking. He is quirky enough to make a short pause to see if anyone was watching. It may occur; he spices his barking with tail wagging or dance around for even more attention.

* The “neglected” dog is barking to release its steam. Its obsessive barking has monotonous rhythm, not specifically aimed at anything. Sometimes he stops its show, but for just to gather strength to be able to start again. He’s barking in stationary position, but sometimes he can lift his head and howl.

* The “overly affectionate” dog suffers from separation anxiety. She misses a person, especially important for herself. Her frantic, high-pitched bark might be compounded with salivation, or whining. Sometimes, she barks by turning right at the door or the window where she saw her loved one. Such dogs are also often expressed their sorrow with chewing, scratching.

* The “defensive” dog is concerned; she is terrified. He sees, hear or smell something, which causes him to fear and communicates in short, sharp, high-pitched barking. You also can see physical signs of fear. He is trembling, shaking or pulling herself together. This dog is looking in the direction of the source of fear and moves forward when he barks. But then he prefers to turn back, retreat to a safe point.

* The “offensive” dog barks from a threat, to protect whatever it is worth: himself, his territory, food or other property, or even the owner. It’s a brave dog who has no remorse about to attack the intruder if gets too close. To let people see themselves bigger than it is, he uses the shocking effect. He barks in increasing tempo; his barking is intensive, but brief, and often preceded by a growl.

Anyway, it doesn’t matter, what’s the reason of the dog barking. That only becomes a problem if you don’t understand what’s behind.

The Hungarian Kuvasz Dog Breed

It doesn’t develop a flattering picture about the Kuvasz dog breed in public mind. And without good reasons, I believe. Aggressive, vicious, unpredictable – you may hear these mostly from those amateurs who don’t know enough about this breed. That opinion is based on their misunderstanding – I’m sure. This dog only does his job which people bred him for: to protect his owner, his family and its values. Let’s look at him a little closer.

How the Kuvasz Story Started?

The Kuvasz is one of the ancient Hungarian sheepdog breeds. According to history, the Komondor, the Kuvasz, the Puli and the Magyar Agár (Hungarian Greyhound) was probably the loyal companions of Árpád’s people settled in the Carpathian basin around the 895th year. The Magyars used this dog to guard their flock against wolves and robbers.

Ergo, this incorruptible, brave and hard dog breed is the part of the Hungarian heritage. At least, a thousand year’s past circulates in his veins. How old this dog breed can be, is a basis of different theories.

Nevertheless, one thing is certain. Archeologists – led by John Matolcsy – found a fossilized, 9th century Kuvasz-type dog skeleton at Fenékpuszta by Keszthely, Hungary in 1978.

The interesting thing is that the formal appearance of the discovery is almost same than the modern Kuvasz. This archeological find proves that this dog can be identified as one of the most ancient canine breeds. Namely, the existence of few breeds can be a little earlier than the 9th century only.

Of course, excavations have been carried out elsewhere, too. For example, bone artifacts are derived from Northern Iraq area already from the 7th millennium BC. Those finds refer for the existence of a strong structured sheepdog similar to Kuvasz at that time.

The guarding dogs were almost the same size as Kuvasz existed on the Eurasian steppes in several color variations. But, most researchers consider the white version of the most ancient form. The same Central Asian environmental impacts and natural selection aspects resulted in a sheepdog breed with similar internal and external properties.

The migratory flows started at different times from the Asian steppes toward West. Naturally, the dogs marched with their tribes as well. The way of life of dogs was very hard like the nomadic tribes. The successful survival required a solid body, strength and probably certain wildness.

Why were these dogs essential for the semi-nomadic Hungarians at that time? On one hand, the public safety wasn’t perfect then – to put it mildly. Moreover, the Hungarians have cattle, horses and other flocks for which other people yearn. On the other hand, don’t forget the wolves and other predators as well.

The two large and white shepherd guard dogs (the Komondor and the Kuvasz) protect people, herds, studs and flocks from predators and robbers. Namely, the shepherd alone wasn’t able to perform this task because he wasn’t sufficiently vigilant, nor strong enough.

Let me mention the hunting as an important use of the Kuvasz from the age of Árpád to the beginning of the XX century. It proves his versatility that this dog was also used to bison hunting. Moreover, he had to survive the wild boar as well. So, we can conclude, it isn’t just any kind of dog breed.

It belongs to the strong, curly-haired, big sort of dogs. Its coat is straight or quite wavy and mostly white or ivory colored. Nobility and strength that his pleasing appearance beams to the outside world. The landscapes of his body are proportional, not elongated and not squat too.

Its body length slightly exceeds the height. His back is a medium length. Its loin is short and strong. The rump is broad, robust and somewhat sloping. Its rump is equipped with rich fur, so this animal may seem a bit overweight. The withers is longer and higher than the back.

Its hanging tail is set low, continued to its hocks, and the end is slightly curved upwards. His chest is deep; the front part of his chest is rising due to the muscles and the sternum. This dog’s belly is slightly tucked up.

The bones of the Kuvasz are strong, without coarseness. This animal has lean muscles and dry joints. Nonetheless, he isn’t bulky, and he is light-footed and nimble compared to his size. The appearance of this dog reflects his tireless workload anyway.

His head is typical wedge-shaped, in harmony with the body, attractive and noble. The skull is elongated, even so, never pointed. His lips are black and tensed, with a scalloped edge at the corner of the mouth. He has been regular, strong teeth with complete scissor bite closing. In optimal case the palate has dark complexion.

The dog’s eyes are slanted, almond shaped as well as dark brown colored. His ears are on top of the head from the continuation of a straight horizontal stems. The top third withdraws from the head slightly, then they’re flat completely.

The ears of the Kuvasz are forming a V shape. When the canine is in observing position, his ears flapped. However, his ears do not standing up and don’t cork-screwing.

The skin of this animal has a lot of pigment, and is tight. The color of the dog’s skin is slate gray. His nose, and the eye-lids are black. The pads are black or slate gray colored.

How big is this dog? The Kuvasz is a large and powerfully built breed.

Height at the withers:    Males: 71-76 cm (28 to 30 in)    Females: 66-70 cm (26 to 28 in)

Weight:             Males: 48-62 cm (100 to 115 lbs)    Females: 37-50 kg (70 to 90 lbs)

The Hungarian Kuvasz is a courageous and fearless dog breed. He protects the persons and properties entrusted to his care, whether at the cost of his life. He is self-respecting, thus in case of abuse it turns into coarsened. And that is NOT the dog’s fault.

He is loyal, reliable, loves his surroundings and his owner. It requires a large place, due to the size of him. This canine is undemanding; his care is simple, and he can face up to the harshest weather. Like us, humans, this dog is grateful for the love and care.

He is a shrewd, docile breed; you can train him to the guard-work easily. I’ve to mention here that due to their high pain threshold and reliable character, these canines tolerate very well the company of kids. But, due to its strength, size and independence, I don’t recommend you to consign the care to your toddlers.

Moreover, you should be aware that the Kuvasz is eager to protect all the people and animals of the family. That also means that he protects your children against foreign children who might hurt yours. So, be careful!

He is distrustful to strangers because of his protective character. But, I assure you, if someone provokes him, he’ll attack almost immediately. Of course, this behavior may be familiar to you from the human world, I think.

He behaves as a dominant with other dogs, and would never let a challenge go unanswered. But, this dog breed is good with other pets if they’re raised together.

Many think; the Kuvasz is an unpredictable, aggressive dog. However, I don’t share this opinion based on my long experience. He’s a normal, manageable, kid-loving dog, if someone gave him ordinary treatment. And I also know that the people are those who don’t choose a right dog for themselves or ruin that animal they brought home earlier.

The intelligence of the Kuvasz is above average. Contrary to popular belief, this dog is gentle and kind, though usually only to his owner’s family. This famous Hungarian sheepdog relaxed than its close relative, the Komondor.

I would say, this animal is not for everyone, mainly not for an inexperienced, first-time owner. This dog requires hard but fair and not coarse treatment just as the Rottweilers. This animal doesn’t bark unnecessarily, but if he barks, it’s advisable to look after the reason.

He feels good for himself in the outdoors; it’s best with a big yard. Because of his need of movement, he is the ideal jogging fellow to you for example. Besides the physical exercises you need to provide him mental challenges as well.

The Kuvasz requires a balanced, calm, clear and consistent teaching. It is not for everyone; the prospective owner should be mentally and physically strong. However, this doesn’t mean that the education methods should be violent.

On the contrary! This dog can learn easily in a harmonious environment, at hand of such a person who doesn’t stifle the canine’s own initiative. The relationship between the Kuvasz and you, the owner will be balanced only, if it is built on the mutual respect and trust.

The condition of that is that you need to spend a lot of time on the rearing and care of the given animal. I don’t recommend you to keep him inside. One reason is the aforementioned desire for freedom; this dog needs enough space.

The other reason is that you probably wouldn’t be happy with the intensive hair losing in the molting period. Anyway, it has normal grooming need, but you can neglect a little the frequent stripping and trimming if you don’t take him to shows.

Typically, it’s not specific medical condition afflicting these large dogs. The exception is the hip dysplasia, which can occur in them. Anyway, they are not really prone to be ill.

Me and the Kuvasz

This animal is one of the dogs of my childhood. I remember a beautiful white female Kuvasz dog; Swan was her name. My family possessed different domestic animals, and I found pleasure to look after them. This also was good in that aspect that I learned liability as a child.

It belonged to my duties to clean the bowl Swan used for eating and drinking. I observed as my Mom prepared Swan’s meals and contributed sometimes, too. Of course, I cleaned up her potty, and checked the texture as I taught.

I remember, how Swan and I played together with a piece of string or a stick. Running in the big yard and rolling on the meadow belonged to our common fun. She had enough energy to weary me. Swan took care of me, and I taught by the parents not to be rude in the game.

Unfortunately, as I grew up, she had aged too. I felt very bad when Swan left us. The loss affected me so deeply that I decided I will no longer have this kind of dog.

But, I didn’t become completely unfaithful to this breed. Because I regularly meet and talk with other dog people and there is a Kuvasz owner among them as well. When I discover Kuvasz dogs on dog shows, they always remind me to my childhood friend.

Anyway, two doors down there is a female Kuvasz dog, it’s two years old now. We have got to know each other already, although I’m not a member of that family. And I often consult with the owner. Maybe I’ll get one doggie from this breed in the future. Who knows?

Finally, I hope, by reading this entry you have come closer to understanding what these precious animals might mean for you during their 10  –  14-year longevity.
